You could probably get decent results with some type of platform hammered in such a way that it looks good (hammer it so that it forms the platform stair shape and combines with the platform below it etc).

If nothing else, you can use dynasty wood, 3 blocks put on top of each other will I think produce the round shape in the middle which will look like one handle protruding towards the camera and then you can hammer the top and bottom diagonally. Or maybe use a plate for that.

You could also do the 3 blocks thing and put switches on top and bottom facing towards the captain so that they look sort of like wheel handles.

Better, but I still can't quite see a ship wheel. I think spikes behave like walls in the way that they change their shape each time you reload the world.

Put the diagonals the other way around.

The problem is that it's really goddamn hard to make a vertical thing that has an axis and whatnot, if it was horizontal you could put various fences as axis in the middle so it would look better.

Try this:

dungeon spike
piece of chain

Or:

some diagonally hammered platform
piece of chain
some diagonally hammered platform

Best so far, maybe hammer the upper block of the support structure to be diagonal?

IIRC this is the problem I had when I was making vertical propellers.

Yeah, some platform types can look ok hammered into stairs but it looks like it's not good for this purpose.

I don't know, the upper left one with spikes is the only one that looks even remotely good, but you'll have problems with the spikes getting hammered automatically.

I'd say keep it until you find something better.

Spikes are the best out of the 3 options.
