I'm absolutely terrible at hitconfirming and reacting to stuff so I choose the characters that have easy hitconfirms and options to exploit the patterns the opponent has.

If your main is trash, just work extra hard to body people. It's more impressive to beat someone with Gief/Ibuki/Juri than it is to win with Chun/Nash/Ryu.
If you're not up to the challenge, then go ahead and pick a crutch character if that's what you absolutely need to win.
