Let's talk about the 300zx. Specifically the twin turbo model. I'm not an enormous car guy, but I do appreciate going fast and am mechanically inclined enough to be able to fix a lot of problems, barring engine surgery. Recently I saw something mentioning the 300zx and it immediately grabbed my attention and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Just the looks alone, I don't know much about the engine yet. The prices are attractive as well. Mainly I want to know more.
Does anyone have one? How reliable are they? Since their Japanese cars I'm assuming the can't the the most difficult thing to work on, am I wrong? How readily available are parts? Ease of modification? I'm eager to find out everything about the car.

I'm a mechanic who loves them and worked on many. Its the most tightly packed engine bay known to man but still worth buying. Put simply, you need to remove the engine to do any significant modification outside of running higher boost. Strong VG30dett engine, transmission and diff regardless of auto or manual. GT style performance that feels great on the road. If you can accept paying a mechanic with a hoist for the major work like turbo swaps then buy it.

Most are pretty happy with the boosted performance of the standard turbos with an intercooler, exhaust and air filter upgrade.

There is something special about the driving experience. The seating position is really nice and the dash wraps around you like a cockpit. If you test drive you will likely buy it regardless of your concerns.

Fun fact. The headlights were used to replace the pop ups on the Lamborghini diablo.

>remove the engine
He's not kidding

it's a GT car
aka a sport car combined with the luxury car
wouldn't worry about the sport part too much (though i heard some reports that twin turbo version isn't that reliable) aside from the fact that the engine bay is really fucking cramped

however, that luxury part is worrying
no matter the car, even if it's bmw 7 or rols royce from that time, all have problems with electrical gremlins and 300zx will be no different

in the end maintenance gonna cost you
don't expect some amazing performance either, like i said it's a GT, not a sport car

I'm willing to pass on work to someone more experienced than I, no problem.
As long as I can go 150 and corner relatively flat I'm golden. What sort of electric problems should I expect?

The reliability claims come from the fact that it's a 20 year old car that more than likely wasn't maintained properly.
VGs are near bullet proof and age is their only downfall.

Sick. They're in Germany though right? Here in the US I believe they're limited.

A) they are ugly, looks like an upside down dingy

B) they are a massive cunt to work on, I'm a mechanic. Had to tell a guy to fuck off with his 300zx the other day because he wanted to replace one head gasket lol.

C) the owners are fuckwits who buy them because they are cheap, then don't spend any money on them, or fix any of the issues.

D) they are old, and have a million tiny vacuum lines and water pipes that you can't get to, and which are probably fucked.

E) not sure if I mentioned they are a cunt to work on. Also ugly.

Diffs and gearboxes are good.

In Australia we only got the n/a version so all our TT's were limited. Never removed a limiter from factory rather changed the entire ECU. There are plenty of plug'n'play units outh there if this scares you.

You know, I don't really mind cars that are difficult to work on. Of course it's a bitch and is always frustrating, but I really enjoy problem solving. And you don't get better at things unless you challenge yourself. So buying a twenty year old car and having to do heavy maintenance on it is OK for me.
Australian cars are so weird, and your import laws seem completely fucked, kind of. You guys get the really cool Jap cars that we don't.

Oh, and I think they're beautiful. Very exotic, futuristic, but in a way that was just futuristic for the time and somewhat related to what cars look like today, but better.

Does that mean you could use the diablo's popups in the 300zx? I always thought it looked like it was designed to have popups but then someone decided "nah it should have fixed lights".

Pull the engine out once for good reason of

sticking a 1JZ in there. Then you can have yer fun.

You know, everyone keeps talking about how hard it is to work on. Maybe a swap would be good.

But that's like buying an RX-7 to swap an LS into it.

That's what I thought as well. I don't know. May end up getting something else. I like Nissan's, they just seem so performance driven. What's everyone's favorite 90s Nissan?

What? NO
Putting a LS in a RX is like buying a unicorn and then removing the horn so it's just a horse. Swapping one piston engine for another is just like swapping a horse.

Eh....

>stick an I6 into a car that's cramped with a V6, that'll fix everything

I've heard they were heavy to really track with and durifto boiiz complain about them sometimes.

don't people just use the rear calipers for their 240's and drop an rb25 in their 240's?

i would like to own a z31, but 32's are nice as well. i'm only scared of the little space i'll have to work on her. i would like a pretty daily

...

Ask me how I know you're an auscunt

assmad gm fangirl detected

Pre-03 Nissans are fine though.

Gm sucks too
No nissan is fine. Ever

holden is GM cunt

Obviously. Holden sucks too

>this assmad

S14. Gets no love.

You know, except for the timing belt. Which, iirc, is pretty important.

R33.

Gonna hijack this thread right quick.
Do y'all think either of these would make good DDs? I've always thought they looked slick but I want something that will be reliable for long trips as well as zipping around town.

Reliable as long as it hasn't been. Earlier models have fuel injectors known to fail over time and TTs have 4 wheel steering that is commonly disabled.

Pic is my 94 NA daily driver.

>digital dash
aw yis

>You know, I don't really mind cars that are difficult to work on

There is difficult to work on, and then there is the 300zx. I'm currently doing an engine swap on a v6 diesel touareg. I would do 20 of these before doing head gaskets on a 300zx. They are that bad.

There is a specialist Nissan import place near where I work, and they hate them. And they love nissans.

How do you know I'm an auscunt?

They're such pretty cars. The horror stories almost don't even change my mind.

The z31 is many times over easier to work on, and most likely more comfortable as well. It's a completely different chassis, jsyk

Thanks. Definitely more interested in the z31. Hopefully I can go see it tomorrow. He's asking 6500$, but if I can get him down to $5500 I think I'm gonna have to pull that trigger.

Was hoping to get something a little faster than what I have now though, but I guess I can always mod it. Any mods you like?

I drove one a while back that was running 14psi on a reflash. It was a lot of fun. It had a bit of turbo lag but not too much. Once the turbos spoil it really takes off. The handling was ok but there was some understeer. The one I drove had a HICAS delete so that might have been why. Got it up to 145mph and it was smooth as fuck. It's definitely not an easy car to work on and you will be working on it.

That's the thing, if it were a car that was hard to work on but really reliable I wouldn't even be worried. But EVERYONE says they have problems. But I guess that's to be expected.

Kek, they aren't pretty. See pic related, turn it upside down and you have a 300zx. The horror stories should turn you off, but if they dont, have fun! There are plenty of better, way more reliable cars available.

Anything old that you mod is going to have some problems. The good thing about the 300 is it has a large following so there are plenty of fourms to go to for help if you don't know how to fix something.

Bikefag here, how do you guys define fast in the context of cars? I've been thinking of picking up a fast car just to have some fun and the 300zx seems like a fairly affordable place to start, but I don't really want to get if your definition of speed is 0-60 in 4-5 seconds or some shit like that (my bike does 0-90 in 3.4 seconds all in 1st gear)

>But EVERYONE says they have problems. But I guess that's to be expected.
Mostly by being neglected and sub par parts being used. Same story with the 3000GT.

But like said, everything has been figured out and sorted by the large following and there are plenty of write ups and how to's around.

A gt car is just a fast sports car. Actual sports cars don't exist anymore. If you can break the tires loose from anything but a dead stop its not a sports car.

You will think that your brakes are stuck on. They aren't fast stock, or mildly modified. Only a very modified one would get close to a bike. It takes a shit load of power in a car to get close to bike levels of acceleration.

i've actually toyed around with the idea of getting a 300zx but then I saw all the posts about how engine work was a bitch then quickly dismissed the idea. I'm still on the fence about it but would really like to own one because I think they look cool.

God damn it Veeky Forums is such a bad board
it needs to be age gated and people need to prove they have a car

Currently daily driving , na unfortunately... loving every second

Your front wheels are on backwards.

That green is nice. Have you had to do any work? How fast is it, compared to the TT version?

Since we have plenty of 300zx bros here, I have a concern.

My N/A has given me some problems.

>The car smokes a lot

not blueish or black, plain white and smells like burnt rubber and burnt wiring combined. (No, electrical system is fine) maybe it's because it doesn't have a cat and a full aftermarket exhaust.

>Every once in a while I take it to red line

I hear a new tick in the engine and I'm constantly afraid of blowing the engine, the car has had one owner and 120K.

The car has service records and it shows no signs of neglect.

Maybe it's normal?

fucking finally somebody else noticed it
last time i said this some retards here called me a dumbass
maybe it wasn't really designed with pop-ups in mind but it's clearly inspired by pop ups delete mods

These are the exact same lights.
Hell, it even has nissan marks on them which audi did a shit job on removing.
I've read somewhere you can get these lights cheaper from lambo than from nissan, though i don't know how true that is.
