So I have an rb25 which had noisy lifters, so I changed the oil and now they're quiet until I take the rpm above 5k then the tick comes back. Am I going to have to tear the head apart and replace them, or is there something I can try before that?

The timing chains are bouncing around and hitting their cover. It will need to be replaced before you get a hole in the cover and all the engine oil comes out in one big mess. Or if the chain breaks/skips a beat, it will destroy the engine.

Probably will cost more to do than the purchase price of the car.
