Are VW Beetles the only older car i can buy for cheap and maintain for cheap?

Are VW Beetles the only older car i can buy for cheap and maintain for cheap?

Tempted to get a PreSmog car.

How are these for DDs?

Ill prob alternate days between my truck and this for driving to work

>How are these for DDs?

Absolutely horrible in every sense.

Also, they are not cheap anymore and are not reliable in any way.

no

that sounds dumb, but at least you can get a baja bug

i think there was one on roadkill once

ITS LITERALLY 20 FUCKING 16
WHAT DO YOU THINK
90S CARS ARE HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING TOGETHER YOU DIPSHIT
DONT LISTEN TO THE MORONIC KIDS ON Veeky Forums

>90S CARS ARE HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING TOGETHER YOU DIPSHIT
>DONT LISTEN TO THE MORONIC KIDS ON Veeky Forums
oh the contradicting

For DD?
They are slow and the brakes are shit.

But you get used to both of those things.

They're easy to work on too.

There are plenty of other choices though. Trucks especially.

>How are these for DDs?
Aircooled/10

>shut it off in the summer, engine heat leaks into interior
>start it in winter
>40 minutes of driving to get good heat.

>individual cylinders overheating
>headgasket jobs at 70k
Good thing here is that there is no coolant to steam clean your cylinders.

Carry a spray bottle of water around to mist your engine fan with on hot days.

You won't keep highway speed either.

You need to calm down.

Ive been on Veeky Forums long enough to filter out the trolls so whatever

>90S CARS ARE HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING TOGETHER YOU DIPSHIT
My popop still runs around in a Dodge Spirit, shit is a tank.

Anyway are you surprised clappped out civics and eclipsi are exploding? I know people who run them with little to no oil because vapefags are lazy as fuck.

Or how about you get a better fan and solve the overheating "problem"

>They are slow and the brakes are shit.
Old worn drum brakes > Disc brakes with ABS
If you want them drums to stop they will fucking stop.

>Or how about you get a better fan
lol if only.

Aircooled engines rarely overheat but they run so fucking hot that you're wearing your seals out fast.
However Vws have had problems with cylinder 3(?) i think overheating.

Also have fun with vapor lock.

You'd have a better chance of winning the lotto than trying to adjust those 4 drum brakes to not slightly pull one way or another. They are pretty sick though. Not to DD though. Get an old 5 speed mini truck like an S10, Ranger or something similar.

>You'd have a better chance of winning the lotto than trying to adjust those 4 drum brakes to not slightly pull one way or another.
kek nobody knows how hektik it is braking yourself over into the other lane.

>tfw only make right turns
>adjust drum brakes to pull right
>remove steering wheel

karmann ghia disc are direct bolt on beetle if you use ghia spindles.
super beetle are on their own.

>Old worn drum brakes > Disc brakes with ABS

...

is sticking a subaru engine in an old vw a good idea? i really hate to have the radiator behind the engine, but i dont know a good place for it.

Mount it on the back like a spoiler

No disc swap?

>Old worn drum brakes > Disc brakes with ABS
They won't once you get a little heat into them, and sure, they'll stop (once), but with tremendous pedal effort, and they'll just lock up.

ABS is shit

That doesn't exactly fall under cheap to maintain. If you pay good money for a clean Beetle then it makes sense but to want a cheap DD only to have to do a disc brake conversion is pretty dumb.

Dis

>40hp on a good day
>Shit gearing
>shit everything
I LOVE beetles but holy fuck nope nope nope NOPE

Get a mini morris or something like a 70's jdm box if you want classic cars without the breakdown meme bs

2001 "90's" shitbox here

Apart from suspention the car was fine even after 200k km

Your'e a bullshit spouting dicklord faggot

Brake fade really don't happen that much in cars my n

I've also only ever locked brakes on a motorcycle but that's a motorcycle. In any event, no stock beetle is automatic so you should downshift

>and make the inferno of an engine even hotter

i do see ghias in junkyards. i could pull one i guess if you are that lazy.

If you disc brakes you can go bigger wheels which will certainly help the gearing issues

>Brake fade really don't happen that much in cars my n
DOHOHOHOHOH

try living in twisty mountain roads on tarmac and dirt/gravel and get back to me

>Every 10 mins
>Brakes overheat
I let them cool for 5 mins and go again

>inb4 upgrade
i have slotted rotors the only way up is bigger calipers and fucking ceramic rotors

>check out my anecdotal evidence

Im not saying its not a worthy investment if you are trying to take care of it and restore it but if your main goal is a cheap DD you'd be better off with something else

M8 I live in pennsyltucky goml

>his brakes overheat
How have you managed to do this? I'm on undersized drums too wtf

mate i was trying to help op. i do not have a fucking beetle.
i said i would be willing to pull a ghia disk brake. that is all i said. my god why lecture me about investments?

Learn to engine brake.

>help op
>tell him to buy a hunk of shit and do a disc conversion

ya sounds like help to me

i gave no financial advice. i never said he should buy it or not.

my bad i had misread your comment. excuse my autism pls.

Corolla

lol in a 4 sp auto?

>drives auto
there's your problem. Don't also tell me it's an SUV/CUV

I'm doing a dorito swap and I've got the rad in the front with metal coolant pipes running under the car. Subaru swaps are great in these cars since the chassis is dead simple and a stock ej20 makes these things insanely fast compared to the 40hp stock

>these things insanely fast
Op gunna roll over

Just don't get a swing axle car, I'll admit to having way more money into my shitty beetle than it really deserves, but since it's irs it handles pretty damn well.

>dorito swap
that's cool as fuck, how much is that costing you?

Too much, but it's been a dream car of mine since high school, which I realize is pathetic. Here's a pic from when I still had the stroker vw engine in it

Swing axle makes it fun tho

>fix or repair daily

ever have something bang that oil filter?

Its pretty sick, I want to dorito swap a ranger or square body s10 for keks but I realize I lack the knowledge necessary to do so so if I do anything it will be some sort of basic bitch LS swap that 9 million people have done before so forums can spoon feed it to me.

No but I did drag the oil pan on my driveway once, and I've scuffed up the bottom of that yoshimura muffler on leaves and pebbles. With the dorito in it I'm going to gain a solid 3 inches of ground clearance

Beetles are fucking great. I just pulled my moms beetle from the barn it had been sitting in for the past 17 years.
I changed some fuel lines and put a clean fuel filter in, and the thing ran first try. Didn't even have to change the spark plugs.

The problem is the computronics.
Only old carbed cars you can do whatever the fuck you want to them but your ECU and TCU would cry like a bitch if you swapped also pretty sure an S10 won't fit an LS.
I had one and that sucker was tight with the v6 Vortec.

>No but I did drag the oil pan on my driveway once
mfw

i don't know but i know what i'd be bangning right now

>I changed some fuel lines and put a clean fuel filter in, and the thing ran first try. Didn't even have to change the spark plugs.
no carb work?

I'm happy for you but you got any more anecdotal evidence for us?

Fine if I wont have room in the engine bay I'll stick a front wheel drive Northstar V8 out of a Cadillac in the bed and make a rear engine rear drive mini truck.

I practically shit myself bro, luckily nothing happened besides it scuffing up the pan a little

No none at all. I should mention that it was parked there with the intention to be there for a long time, so my dad filled the cilinders with oil before putting it away.

The thing smoked like a motherfucker when I first turned it on though.

damn m8 that car looks good in this picture.
Kinda jelly tbqh, looks radical for hoons.

>California
My condolences.

I appreciate the sentiment. Yea this thing is a fun little hoonwagen I enjoy myself

never liked those rag top things.

>herby died

...

>Beetle
>cheap
lol
Maybe if you want a rusted to shit late model. Hippy tax has made decent Beetles more expensive than better cars, and pretty much only nostalgic boomers and the people raised by them to think it's cool.

They are also awful to drive. They don't accelerate, they don't corner, and they don't stop. They have no air conditioning, and no safety features. Basically the only good thing about them is that they're lightweight and simple. Beetles are one of those old cars that is shit because it doesn't have enough old car goodness to make up for the lack of new car goodness.

Beetle's old car goodness:
>lightweight
>extremely simple
>easy to work on

That's just not enough to make up for the shitbox badness:
>awful brakes
>awful handling
>awful acceleration
>awful comfort
>awful safety
>awful practicality

Sure, you can heavily modify it and make it perform decently, but you can also buy a better car for a similar price and have a superior starting point.

I hope you guys don't mind if I hijack this tread a little but what do ya'll think about this?

sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/5706738250.html

I already talked him down to $1500. He claims it only needs a battery so I'd take one with me for a test drive.

I'd use it for rallycross and general hooning. I already have a DD.

looks ok. push start it and drive it

>no safety features.
Yeah if you crash in an old RR car you will die 100% of the time.

In b4 butthurt beetlefags claim safety is not a good thing and try to strawman the argument that some safety is good by using ultrafat disgusting modern cars as an example.

I put a cage in my beetle, but it's a track car at this point. Stock the thing was about as safe as a wet paper bag

>Hippy tax has made decent Beetles more expensive than better cars.
You can buy running Beetles for only $1500. They're by far the cheapest classic.

>They are also awful to drive.
Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to modern cars.

>You can also buy a better car for a similar price and have a superior starting point.
For $2000 maybe but those cars would need to be smogged. OP is in California.

what wheels are those? almost look like 928

>You can buy running Beetles for only $1500. They're by far the cheapest classic.

Learn to read, retard:
>Maybe if you want a rusted to shit late model.
applies to what you just said. A running $1500 beetle will be a later model and it will be rusted to shit.

>Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to modern cars.
Wrong. Plenty of 60s and 70s cars are way better to drive than a Beetle, and you're not going to get a driveable 60s beetle for $1500 anyway, the old ones are the most valuable. Beetles stuck around for a long time and never got much better. An '80s beetle is just as shit to drive as a '60s beetle, even if it can manage to do the speed limit and handles marginally better. You have to heavily modify any beetle to make it anywhere near good unless you enjoy putting around at 55mph in the searing heat and taking a minute to get there.

>For $2000 maybe but those cars would need to be smogged. OP is in California.
OP didn't say his budget was $2,000, why are you implying that he did?

Fronts are 87 944 and the rears are 83 944.

does it have to be that way to get the right backspacing?

what fuck is this

bn.craigslist.org/cto/5683263146.html

is this at all possible?

On my super beetle, yes. On a standard or earlier flat window super, I don't know. The late supers need like a 55+ offset on a 7 inch wheel for it to fit at all

Datsun's are somewhat affordable but they are starting to become collectors cars... Parts are cheap though.

do it, put brotrucks and wranglers to fucking shame

it seems like the worst of everything

And it's still better then a jeep.

>A running $1500 beetle will be a later model and it will be rusted to shit.
Maybe in whatever shithole you live in but rust isn't a big issue in California.

>Plenty of 60s and 70s cars are way better to drive than a Beetle.
Learn to read, retard:
>Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to MODERN cars.
Other 60's cars may be better to drive than a Beetle but they're far more expensive for a decent example. But what I said was that all cars from the 60's are worse to drive than modern cars.

And $2000 is the minimum for a shitty AW11 or something which performs way better than a Beetle but needs to be smogged and has limited potential unless you put in so much work that you may as well have bought the Beetle. Presmog is a huge advantage if you want to modify your car in CA.

>>Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to MODERN cars.
WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG
faglord who gets no enjoyment out of driving vintage cars detected
Go play with yourself in your 2000-something E class benz, becky

>becky
why

Lol autist got triggered hard.

A 2000-something landyacht E class could outhandle anything from the 60's.

Hell, even a modern minivan can outdrag a lot of old school pony/muscle cars.

Show me on the doll where the w211 touched you.

>Hell, even a modern minivan can outdrag a lot of old school pony/muscle cars.

It can.
Old muscle cars are slow as fuck.

base model 4 speeds of popular late 60's/early 70's will match a 2016 Sienna down the 1/4.

>ameritard delusion
>bragging of keeping up with a minivan in the first place

lmao

such cars did 0-60 in like 7 seconds and can't drive past 120mph
they're painfully slow

>autists like this exist
You've spent too much time around your boomer dads

>bone stock I6 with economy carbs, 4 gears, and small wheels can keep up with a modern a 3.5 liter V6 with a 6 speed auto.

Dunno if you know but that's pretty good considering one of those is 50 years old.
If you bother to tune you can get them ever quicker.
Anyway '71 began the year of pigfat muscleboats.
The difference between '69 and '71 mustangs are like night and day.

120 with four gears is pretty good.

>this faggot thinks an E class is fun
>this faggot thinks a minivan is more fun than classic muscle

No one mentioned fun.
>moving the goalposts
Also luxury cars aren't supposed to be fun like muscle cars.

>120 with four gears is pretty good.
yeah, for a 50 years old performance car

>slow
>unreliable
>pigfat
>cantturn

yeeeehaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww such great fun!

Good = fun pretty much

Maybe in your childish mind.

There are no head gaskets on air cooled vw dumbass
