It was never supposed to be full-on realism. It's a mishmash of realism (prominent noses, visible lips, more realistic eyelids) and the kind of exaggerated proportions you see in anime (larger eyes, greater eye spacing, generally rounder features).

I like it. It has its roots in some western aesthetics with its bias towards some more realistic details (I'm getting kind of tired of characters having tiny dots for noses), but it's still positively Japanese in the proportions which it chooses to exaggerate.

I don't really mind dots that much (I would take them any day of the week over modern-Takeuchi's garbage noses), I just dislike how frequently they're used. The anime art-style is already extremely samey as far as styles go, and this is largely because it abandons detail for a more simple aesthetic. Dots are just another detail that are lost, and therefore an additional shift towards homogeneity. It's on that principle that I somewhat dislike their frequency of use in recent years. Still, there are plenty of artists who don't dot, so it isn't really worth complaining about that much.

Plus, dots are kind of cute.

They look a bit fetal-alcohol-syndromy, but then again basically almost all characters in the anime style do.

I stopped being bothered by large amounts of eye-spacing and bug-eyes a long time ago, so it simply isn't an issue with me.

And I dunno if I'd really categorize as109 with having a bias towards realism or anything. His style leans a bit towards the general-anime style than it does towards realism, and his art utilizes big eyes and large amounts of eye-spacing as well.
