The Mazda is older than a civic

FWD is worse because you're already going uphill and you're almost always on the throttle, you've got even less traction at the front just for steering. Throwing in driven wheels here cuts your traction even further while a RWD presses its weight onto the back wheels on the throttle as well as with gravity. This is a situation where FWD really does lose.

I didn't say you couldn't go fast into the apex or that you needed to brake, just that you should let off the throttle to maintain traction until you're through it.
