Huh, dunno about you, but I got super defense+attack buff+buffs up Gil the first time I went in and got completely annihilated.
The second time he had the counter and attack buffs. Went in with Gil/Shuten/Scat/Mashu/Fionn/Cu and I beat him easily with Cu at 1 HP it was mch much better.

Super armor and all attacks are crits, user. You do even less damage to this gil and his buffs don't go away. His armor gets a little weaker over time, but not at a good rate.

In hard mode he takes about 95-90% reduced damage it seems like, he gains attack each turn and supposedly loses defense but after around 15 turns it still seemed to be at least 90% damage reduction.

According to >reddit you can remove hard mode Gil's buff by using buff removal 3 times on him. The difficult part is doing that and maintaning a competent team.
