even if you don't like these exact cars, use them as starting points. the geo metro is the most efficient car you can buy for this kind of money. the geo prizm is a rebadged toyota corolla, and i generally have better luck finding prizms with less miles and lower price tags than i do corollas from the same year. chevy cavaliers are durable as fuck and fairly cheap. the camry is, well, a camry.
even if you don't like these specific cars, use them as starting points. also consult the sticky- anything you find this cheap might need some work, and the sticky will give you an idea of what to look for on these cars.

This might be good. Cylinder misfire, probably the coils/plugs. Easy fix that only requires a socket wrench

I owned that exact same year and trim (with manual trans.) for 6 years. Literally not one issue. Drove from Virginia to Alaska and back, and back and forth to Boston 4 times a year for 5 years, and to Colorado and back several times.
Granted, I bought the car new. That's why I'm asking, how poorly did they age?

People here have a hate boner for GM, granted the Ion had a shitty shitty interior, but the Ecotec is a great motor, especially paired with a manual
Also parts availability is still good with these considering they're still recent
