I've been thinking about picking one of these up, is it really just a meme car?

I've been thinking about picking one of these up, is it really just a meme car?

I enjoy it.

I've driven one. A true GTS with LSD that was bone stock.
One of the most fun cars I've driven.

It's a meme car, but an extremely fun meme car.

I haven't driven an AE86, but I've driven an AW11 which is basically the same thing with the engine in the wrong place. The tiny size and awesome engine noise make it feel much faster than it actually is, and it's great in the corners. Probably the most fun car I've driven despite an anemic 115hp (my current DD makes double that).

I imagine the hachiroku wouldn't grip as hard, but you could have a lot more tail-happy fun with it.

>but I've driven an AW11 which is basically the same thing

go sit in a fire

MEMES
Enjoy your RWD overpriced ford escort tho

YES

mfw being a furry tripfag

Meme car.
Remember, Dagumi's 86 was heavily modified by his dad long before he started racing it, and even then he was only able to win through his raw skill, and in spite of the car, not because of it. The car itself was only able to compete when they did a swap with a damn touring car engine.

It's a slow, old, beautiful, fun, heap of shit car.

In short, get one if you can afford and want one.

I'd rather an AE86 than your shitbox FF festiva

This. It's not a good boiracer car unless you mod the shit out of it and ruin it. Enjoy it as it is, the elegant humming 80's shitbox it was made to be.

Check for rust and set some money aside for repairs because it's still a 30yr old car with 30yr old components.

Other than that, it's fun as shit. Any normal car will be "meh" but this car handles like a go kart and you will have the time of your life driving from mountain to city,

I've driven stock, modified, and extremely modified renditions of the 86 with me owning a slightly modified Corolla.

If you do get one, my advice for you, is to have plans for it down the road. For the money you can buy a newer and faster car with modern amenities, especially during the summer and winter seasons. It could be hella fun if you put some money into it though. Your choice.

>This be my SR20 86

>implying that's my only car
Lmao.

>Modding
>Ruining anything.

>Polyurethane bushings, chassis stiffening, suspension mods

It's an improvement, more than anything.

Their is nothing good about this car other than it being RWD that is literally it

What car would you guys suggest that keeps the RWD, the boxy-hatchback-racey look, but is newer and more affordable?

Have you ever driven a 1UZ swapped 86? how crazy was it? that's my dream swap.

Here's mine, 7age 86.

Also, do you know how to take out the old weather stripping from the car where the door meets?

I had a shitty one, I wouldn't mind having a nice 6-8k one but I know I'd end up spending another 2 years and 15k on it making it function in line with its mid 90s contemporaries

Oh yeah, you also own a shitbox volvo too so I still wouldn't talk if I were you, furry faggot.

>I haven't driven an AE86
>but I've driven an AW11 which is basically the same thing

This

And an na Miata, and a Toyota truck, and a Honda but that's boring fuck that thing
This

Sw20 turbo

I know that feel OP.
Almost bought a Datsun 810, but 6500U$D was too much for something with a moldy interior.

I wish, lmfao! I've driven an F20 swapped Corolla and that thing is a fucking beast! Best swap, imo.

If I remember correctly, all I had to do was pry it off with my hands and installed it the same way.

It's RWD, yeah, less boxy, ok...but that's it.
It's a sports car, it's a 2 seater, it is entirely different.

Is it affordable though, since it's a muh reliable Toyota?
Anyway, that won't do. It's an amazing car and looks fantastic, but it's not it. Even a Porsche 944 would be closer to the 86.

S15>EP3R>AE86

Get your Levin ass out of here.

I heard that because the engine was heavier, the nose tends to pivot down but the noise and power must be god tier.

Thanks for the tip!.

Alternatively you could buy a TE70 corolla.

1/10th the price
Same bhp
Lighter weight

The only problem is that its less well known, and i dont know if america got the 2T-G engine.

also Celica XX, though those are starting to become more expensive while TE70's are still fairly unknown.

Datsun 120Y is more modern looking but still has that fastback look, similar to the Mitsubishi Celeste. Although the 120Y turbo is "okay" the celeste is slow as shit when its stock.

I KNOW WHAT I GOT!!!!1111111
Fucking ricer tax driving the price up. Every car I've seen near nyc is some combination of riced to shit, poorly modified, heavily stripped interior, heavily overpriced and >sr5. I can't find a good one and I don't think I ever will

Literally nothing, they just gave up on cars like that. 90s 86 was Civic. AE92 was FWD already. The only extra-small FWD car that were kept being made were roadsters like Miata and MR-S.

If weight is the problem there's also aluminum engines like Camry's V6, people at least put them in AW20 although I'm sure that one has more space.

>but I've driven an AW11 which is basically the same thing
Nah

Is it possible to tune and boost 4a-ge to 290 hp? I saw a car like that on sale.

>"if they modded a car I like before me then it's a riced piece of shit!!!"
>"I w-w-woulda kept it all stock and done mickey mouse repairs instead of installing aftermarket performance mods!"
jealous poorfag: the post

I'm not against modding the internals at all, it's modding the looks is what kills cars.

Veeky Forums hasn't driven let alone ride in an actual drift oriented AE86.

It can slam through gears and is extremely light. I was surprised to see the engine bay devoid of anything besides the engine, battery, and the radiator.
I had the privilege of riding in a heavily modified GTS with a 2 way LSD, coilovers, weight reduction, and a ITB'd 20V black top. It isn't a car for top speed, but the acceleration is pretty crazy for a 1.6 liter.

Didn't Keiichi say the 86 was the perfcet beginner's drift car? Something along the lines of it being easy to control mid-drift and it can break loose pretty easy.

A blacktop 20v with open trumpets is absolutely orgasmic sounding.

yes its a fucking meme car. Way over priced for what it is.

How does the LSD affect the car?

290? Not n/a i think with turbo though you could probably make near 400. (With supporting mods of course you retards)

I think, the top tier n/a formula Atlantic engines were making 240/245 bhp. And those were rebuilt after each weekend of racing.

AW11 is cheaper and better

>AW20
there is no such thing
you mean SW20

It makes it all trippy n shit mane

It's turbo, yeah. The guy wrote that the pressure is 1.1bar for 290 hp and you can safely make it 1.6 which will take it even higher, so that makes sense. Of course it had a shitload of other mods.

It's not though. 86 is much easier to control in corners and it also has storage space and backseats. AW11's only advantage is that it looks cooler.

Of course.

V6 aw11 swap is much more complicated than v6 sw20.

3sgte into aw11 is the more common swap.

AW11 has more grip, more agility, and independent rear suspension.
In reality, the ae86 is only really easier to drift.

A 2-Way LSD is non-nig-rig version of a welded diff. I imagine an AE86 benefits from it, because the owner probably wouldn't have put in a $1000 diff there if the 86 drifted fine with a open diff to begin with.

I'm not saying bone stock AE86's can't or can drift like gods, because the modified one certainly did, and I've never been in a bone stock one.

Honestly, the price can be somewhat justified in the same way clean S13's are expensive, not even because of Initial D.

The AW11 is a better grip car with the weight of the engine right over the back wheels. The MR layout isn't favorable to drifting though, whereas the AE86s FR layout is.

Both have their applications.

Drifting aside (i dont do much of that)

When racing both cars are more even than you think, alot more of it comes down to driver skill.

The AW11 is alot harder to strip down under a ton while the AE86 is easy to do so. The 5% (i think) difference in powerloss isnt a real issue.

>tfw I won't have any sort of significant project car money/time/space for a number of years while in college

>tfw won't be able to find a clean LHD ae86 for under 10k in a few years

>tfw will probably never find a decent job or have a place with a driveway, by the time I do manually driven cars will be illegal

> tfw will never have a black BEAMS swapped 6 speed eight-six with velocity stacks and BBS RZs

what's the point of 7age? isn't it a 7afe block with 4age head?

Itsuki pls

Faen, hvor mye kostet den?

The torque, it's a 1.8 instead of a 1.6 so it's has a lot more torque. Makes it a lot more street able.

There's one criteria by which it's objectively better than everything else. If you want a small RWD car it's basically obligated to look like Miata, MR-S, Boxter, you get the idea. But AE86 actually has roof and shit. There are MR-2 and Fiero though.

Nah m8, get one of these:

My dude

I have one and despite it being an overpriced Corolla, it's the most fun thing I've ever sat in. Sure, it's old, a bit lacking in power, few amenities and so on, but it feels like a go cart.

Just be prepared to spend a ton of money on fixing a bunch of things because it's a 30 years old car.

it makes for an exceptional drift car in the sense that you only need minimal power to get it sideways, but all these retards selling them for thousands are insane.
you fags dont realise this car is basically worthless in japan as it's the equivalent of an 80s shitbox domestic anywhere else for a couple hundred at most.

you could probably import one without the rice tax on it

Prices in Japan are somewhere around 6k for a good shape one, topping out over 10k for a tofu-replica in mint condition. If you want one cheap-ish, you'll have to stick to domestic. You'd have to pay shipping on top of actual sales price, plus whatever you have for customs duties.

S12 Silvia, without the newer part

An s12 is harder to find parts for than an ae86, I wouldn't call them more affordable. I have an ae86 and i have a friend with an s12 and he cant find parts anywhere.

Let's also not forget that there are more of them in Japan than they imported to the US in the 80s.
