No. I didn't have the cash for a manual IS300 (or the time to find one) and I wanted this car more than I wanted to drive something else with three pedals. As a side note, the manual wasn't introduced until 2002, and they never made a manual version of the wagon.

Before I got the Lexus, I was daily driving this VW Rabbit with a 5-speed manual. I loved it dearly, but some idiot in a Tahoe lost control on the freeway and totaled my car.

Most of them are. It seems that many of these have landed in the hands of ricebois who crash them out. This one was super clean despite the mileage. I really wanted a blue one with a tan interior, but I couldn't find one anywhere after a month of searching.

Not only that, but if I were to do a manual swap I'd go balls out and drop in an R154 from the Supra TT. Then I could either turbocharge my 2JZ or swap in a 1UZ V8.

not even the autos are safe, my co-worker bought an auto is and had to replace pretty much the entire steering assembly and the oil pan gasket in the first few months of owning it. mechanic doing the work said it was definitely drifted at some point.

you're not going to do any of that any time soon so might as well start by taking care of it and maintaining it before it shits itself instead of thinking of the sik mawdz you're wanting

Right, so I haven't actually spent any money on mods. I have a year of college left, so whatever cash I can spend on the car between now and then will be sorting out things like scheduled maintenance, preventative care, and replacing worn out suspension bits. I've spent about an hour googling "IS300 power mods" and R154+NA-T/1UZ is what I've gathered. I know where my priorities belong.

Do not mod an IS300 unless you have more money than sense - you will regret it deeply in a few years.

I understand how you're feeling - the IS300 is one of the best buys for the price. It has the dynamics of an E46 while having a more refined, Lexus-tinged ride quality and generally solid Lexus-level dependability. There are a few things that fuck up on you (start doing a drain + fill on the auto trans to extend its life, don't do flushes and look into replacing the bushings for the #2 lower control arms) but generally there aren't any "holy shit you better have thousands of dollars saved up" time bombs. I used to have a black 2002 IS300 as well and for the longest time I daydreamed about taking it up to the specialist tuning shop and dropping thousands of dollars (probably $5000-10,000+ truth be told) to turbocharge the car and have a whole bunch of shit done to it to have a 4 door Supra, but really you're better off saving that money towards a different car that already has the power that you want.

In all honesty, if you really want to mod then you should buy a FR-S or BRZ and just mod that - those are also RWD, have a better chassis, and weigh 600lbs less than the IS300. Despite having a 15-18hp and 60+ ft/lbs of torque advantage, the IS300 and FR-S/BRZ get similar straight-speed numbers.
