It wouldn't go down the hole. It either flung up and away when I shifted into it, or blocked the shifter, or only partially went into the hole and then came back out when I shifted out.

A good tech will never ever take money from a customer's car. $20 at most is not worth my job. Some customers will "test" you too, they'll plant a bait bill in hopes you'll take it.
