Nah, the "Christians were persecuted under the Roman authorities" is mostly a myth, a narrative created to create cohesion (what is called an 'invented tradition' in sociology).

It's happened time and time again: Christians eventually drop their faith once the novelty of being a martyr goes away and they realize it's more convenient to convert. See, for example, how Egypt and the Levant converted after the Muslim invasions.
