On a more serious note, variable displacement engines have been around awhile.
With improved computers, the more advanced car systems do reduce the number of active cylinders at cruising speed on the highway. That can be done because the amount of HP needed to maintain the cruising speed is far less than the HP needed to accelerate up to that speed. Reduction in the number of active cylinders saves gas. Uneven wear is prevented because the computer picks different sets of cylinders to even out the wear.
In effect, the displacement of such a V6 or V8 engine is half that of the normal engine. So, if you have a 3.6L V6, that would be 1.8L worth of engine which is certainly less displacement than OP's 2liter mountain dew bottle.
