Because VMF DD's are not as stealthy and manoeuvrable, so they don't do typical close-range DD work as well as USN DDs do. Raw USN dmg/min is higher, but this advantage falls off at range.

Honestly, in Danae I find myself having to rely on hail mary torpedo runs much more often than I'm comfortable with if I want to do good damage. I just don't feel as if a cruiser line should rely on torpedo suicide runs as much as the low-tier british cruisers.
