If I was to get my first certification towards being a mechanic what would it be?

I have an interest in getting into it, but don't want to fuck it up and would like to build my knowledge enough to become a tech for the electrical cars in the future. I don't like them but I know where the money will be.

Don't listen to anyone telling you mechanical engineering will get you into the automotive manufacturing industry. There are few openings nowadays and it is highly competitive.

OP I'm kind of in your position too. I'll graduate HS at the end of the year, and I really don't know what I want to do.
I kind of want to go into some kind of engineering because I'm really good at sciences and I love upper level math, but I can't imagine sitting at a desk all day, even if the pay is great.
I'm really tempted to save up a little money to get me started, get some certifications and open a little private tuner shop in my town. I'd love to work on cars, and I love modifying things. There aren't many places like that near me, so I think I'd get some business. Also, for custom work like that I could probably charge out the ass in labor.

You don't need an engineering degree for that. Mech eng. degree is pretty hard and there is a real chance you will become a self loathing CAD monkey. Thread carefully.

I'm a sophomore in mechanical engineering, keep in mind that shit is a lot of fucking work. Not to mention very hard.
On most campuses engineering is one of the highest credit majors. You'll need to take a lot of chemistry and higher level math.
Not to mention if you aren't fairly intelligent and good at problem solving and math, you're fucked.

Not who you're replying to, but in college you can major in one thing and minor in another. You'll have a degree in your major, and a minor certification in your minor. This is all in the same 4 year span.

Airplane mechanic. Get to work on planes, planes are designed to be worked on, get paid a lot because only those certified are allowed to touch the plane mechanically.

Read about this, Saw a lot of places hiring just so you can get your ASE. They seem to really like that.

I work at America's Tire/Discount Tire.
I became full time (manager) withing 11 months of starting there.
I work 50 hours a week for 15.25 an hour, I get full benefits, and if a new store opens up, I can become owner of that store and earn 120,000 a year minimum. After managers hit a quota, everything else they make is salary, and goes to them.
We get every Sunday and holiday off, techs get $700 in bonus checks a year, managers get $2500 a year.
Its FUCKING worth it.

Right now a crew chief at azp55. Currently do everything that doesn't involve a computer. Runs bays, etc. Planning to go full time. Just another person making it sound worth it.

Yep. Everyone has to start as a tech in order to get promoted. I didn't even know how to mount a tire. They train you on everything. But you have to have some common sense to do well.

If you're Australian the first step is doing a Pre-Apprenticeship and then an Apprenticeship but all together that takes 4.5 years

We had a guy ask if he has to work when he's supposed to, or if he can just come in whenever he wants. And then we have a guy who worked 8-6 on his first day, and didn't complain once.

When I first started I was getting 20 hours a week. Then after the second week I was getting 30-35. And it's super easy to get more

.That's actually the best way. You start out as a tech, you have to become a master tech first. Crank cars out in 13 minutes, work hard, and then start running it as service coordinator. Kick ass, run the back room, and get 16 cars out an hour. Honestly, just work hard, and stay motivated.

We work open to close 5 days a week. Hours are 8-6, but as managers we have to show up early, so 7:20-6. And we never leave until all the cars aren't done. So we can be there from 7:20-7.
