How long would it take for the new stuff to kick in if I restarted today? Does it start up the same day or will I have to wait?
Also, someone said that when Nook buys your town you get to keep your catalog and the dosh he gives you. What if he doesn't come? Do I lose my catalog or do I still get to keep it?

You can make a new character, get the free coupons then exchange for whatever you want. Then, you can throw those items you bought on the ground the next day, pick them up with your main, and delete the alt.
Of course, if a friend has the items you want to buy in his/her town, then your friend must make this effort to get you the items.

I really hope they do. I have a bunch of amiibos that don't get much use. I'd love to see at least some themed unlockable kickknacks from them.

They're not done supporting the game (there's wifi campground visitors coming eventually) but more amiibo series support seems unlikely. This is likely the last big push of content for the game.
