I'm a second-year rider on an R3, started out on a Ninja 250. For any anons unfamiliar with the inside-baseball, the Ninja 250 is ranked somewhere in the 3-5 range of best bike, while the R3 and GS500 duke it out over the 1 and 2 slots.
I was always impressed by the performance of the Ninja 250, but it just isn't in the same league as my R3. The drop-off in engine performance when you leave the 250cc class is pretty steep, and it must be even steeper when you look at sub-250cc bikes. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible.
The consensus on /dbt/ is that most of the value-added comes from the additional low-end torque. I can't speak to the quality of other bikes, but the dominance of the R3 self-perpetuates pretty easily. Knowing that I'm riding the best performing bike for its class is a comforting thought.

The design itself essentially negates how much "sport" they can have; the weight, its distribution, the height of pegs/boards, its all decent for comfort but wrong for performance. Get a muscle cruiser (like a Vmax or something) to at least have a fair bit of straight line power or start looking at standards/more upright sportbikes for a middle ground between comfort and sport performance/handling.

Make sure your battery still has good charge (if not, charge it up first) and just fire it up. If it won't start you might have to do something, otherwise just don't be too hard on it until your next fill up with fresh gas.

I started on a RVF400 which makes ~53hp, and then moved to a 636. Never really felt like the power was crazy or uncontrollable on either of those bikes, even as a beginner on the RVF

No, sporty as in actually sporty. Sporty as in worth paying the harley tax for more than image and nostalgia - sporty as in relevant performance.
unfortunately, the sportster's performance was not relevant outside of a fairly niche redneck racing series (that deserves better, but it is how it is)
Buell made actual sportbikes, but couldn't compete with japanese pricing or european image, legacy and competence.

Has no real issues besides a pumper carb that was sitting and it doesnt work very well cause of it. Have acontacted jerry and he said he would give me a deal on an exaust and set up the carb to run it for free. Also looking to put kx 250 forks on it if I do end up keeping it.
