Actually I had a Renault from 2008 to 2013. It was a company car that I used to go and come from work.
It was a Symbol with a diesel engine that could barely reach 140 km/h.
When it was given to me was almost brand new (only had 133 kms). Because of that I always made sure to take care of it, proper maintanance, you know the drill (company was paying for it).
One day in spring 2013 it refused to start. Got it toed to the dealer where they said it will cost about 3000 euros to fix. Boss refused and I got an Opel.

If you have 2 engines with the same displacement, same Euro, same production year the diesel one will be taxed 2 to 3 times as much.

And for diesel you're slapped with special "pollution tax" depending how old your car is. I have to pay over 100€ for 20 years old diesel truck and huge road tax because how outrageously big 2.8 litre engine is for europe.

Well the worst problem that I had with my golf MK4 GTI in the last 5 years (that's when I got it) was a broken lightbulb.
My brother had his (MK5) for about 2 years and no problems.
