In Hard you can get away with relying very heavily on Effie for early game. You're reaching the point right now where it starts being important that your core is leveling up otherwise you're going to be stuck with shit units and daddy Xander and mommy Camilla need to save the run.

Using castle battles for supports is grinding. If you still want to do it, just do the battles; you won't get any EXP from it but you will get support points, so just pair up the units you want to get together and let them fight some enemies, especially since they can't die.

Only using a couple units isn't a terrible idea, it's better than spreading your EXP too thin. That being said, you should probably find a couple more units that do different things or else you'll be in a lot of trouble come endgame. Don't try to keep everybody at an even level, just find a 'core' team of units that is roughly what you're allowed to bring into every level, make sure they're diverse enough to do what you need them to do, and focus on them. If you don't think you're going to use a unit or one isn't keeping up, there's no problem with just benching them forever (until you start not having enough units to deploy each chapter).

I like to think the villager Chrom marries is the same one he saves in the prologue.
