#1 of all things on discount that you should get is mechbays, mechbay sales only happen maybe twice a year
Can't really recommend any of the heroes in the mastery packs unless you have money to burn.
Oxide is decent enough but nothing special.
Arrow is decent, and does something unusual, but isn't stronger than the other BJs.
All other mediums besides the sparky are lackluster, and even that's only reasonable energyboat at best.
Elmo, Firebrand, and Jester are all good heroes, but are pretty far from meta.
All the assault heroes are memes besides the misery and that's good but limited into one build. Hellslinger will run the standard battlemaster 4lpl + giant xl just fine, but you're sacrificing the quirks from the 2C to get it and isn't worth it.

I'm no expert since I don't own any of these mechs, but here's some that definitely stand out as as far as I know: Oxide (Jenner), used to be ridiculously OP, not as relevant anymore but still strong Arrow (Blackjack), 6 machine gun memes, obviously not for everyone Sparky (Griffin), fast, jump jets, big laser vomit Black Widow (Warhammer), strong ballistic builds Bounty Hunter II (Marauder), strong ballistic + laser builds or just laser vomit Misery (Stalker), AC/20 and large pulse lasers stuff

Your mother is overrated, but they still make room for her tonnage.
The problem is you need a target decay module unlocked and equipped to make the most of a lrm boat and as a new player you don't have one.
If you had come here first and asked a recommendation for your first mech, you'd have been told hunchback, stormcrow, or warhammer for your first mech. All of which can run a variety of builds, are reasonably cheap, and don't require any special knowledge or equipment to play.

I didn't even think of coming here first and just jumped in blindly, but after messing around with some more trial mechs and getting a feel for more variety, I did enjoy the hunchback and running around with big ol'shoulder cannons, I also liked running around in the panther and pestering people with the PPC's, the Crab, Ebon Jaguar and Dragon were also pretty fun, and as far as weapons go I really enjoyed using the PPC's, Auto Cannons and While I liked the gauss rifle, it actually felt kinda underwhelming
