New chapter in life, new car. Hep me family men of Veeky Forums

Hey Veeky Forums. I'm beginning a new chapter in my life and I am expecting twins shortly. I will be needing a new car to fit my new family. I'm currently looking at crossovers just because the height/ space. Before I get roasted I really don't want to go that route..but they tend to be the safest bet especially when hauling kiddos. I'm basically just looking for a car to get us around safely with good gas cost and well as maintenance. So far my choices are
>Honda crv
>Honda accord
>Honda civic
>Subaru outback
I like the Subaru but Subaru is pretty crap from what I hear in the service dept.So that basically leaves the Honda line-up. I'm looking at pre-owned btw.

Congrats on the upcoming kids.

Sorry to hear you're having twins. Your first 6 months will be sleepless.

Now. Onto the car. You want something with a lot of trunk space, and decent rear seat access. imo civics and accords won't cut it. Subi outback, or even nissan xtrail could be good.

Soccer-mom cars are invariably SUV's for a reason

Why not an Odyssey?

I mean you're going have instant family, and there is a good reason they are so popular. They are comfy for people with kids.

I'm mean I'm not the taller guy...I'm probably gunna end up moving the seat up a bit in the accord...I gotta get in one to see the driving position...I honestly don't want to be sitting the the floor either for plain old visibility issues.

Get a panther like a late model Town Car or Grand Marquis. it's basically the last of the breed of large family sedan, bulletproof, has a V8, massive trunk space, seats 6, and is super comfy. of course at best the MPG is 15/25, depends how cheap gas is where you live I guess. maintenance tends to be cheap though, no shortage of spare parts or mechanics who can work one.

I couldn't help you if you are dead set on an SUV, but crossovers are literally a meme. It's a hybrid between SUV and hatchback but worse than either, so definitely don't get one of those.

Or you could just get a minivan like the Oddyssey or the Pacifica or something.

congrats on your family

get a 4runner.

All because the wife wants an SUV doesn't mean it can't be a real SUV that doesnt emasculate you.

Honda Odyssey.

Op here. I never said anything about the wife wanting a SUV...Also not getting this "real" SUV

these are great options

and minivans

all memes aside, they're fucking practical; they exist for a reason. carrying stollers and shit will deffinately take a decent amount of space.

When they're older you WILL need a minivan to haul your kids and their friends.

Oh I'm sorry...I totally forgot to mention I will be parking this in tight spaces as my work has no parking spot. I would hate to miss a spot because suv sizes and what not.

Got to be 4 door. Dual carseat are hard enough to fit, when they both rear face it's worse. But your infant seats, then go car shopping. Seriously, it's not like singletons.

My taco double cab was useless until the seats went forward. Basically there was 6"between the driver's seat and steering wheel- physically impossible.

Our xc90 worked until it needed more repairs than it was worth, and we switched to a grand Cherokee, then upgraded from infant carriers to still rear facing seats. In both cases you get used to sitting straight up at the wheel, legs bent.

Note all this is impossible without 4 doors, you simply cannot get to the car seats when they're rear facing. The xc90 and grand have enough room for one medium adult between them, but until the seats flipped to forward facing you could not actually get in.

actually, I take it back, don't get a Town Car, those have too many unique "luxury" differences with the generic platform that will break, mostly electronic shit. Just the Grand Marquis is a good option. The Crown Vic ended civilian sales in 2008, the Grand Marquis lasted to 2011

Accord crosstour v6

Toyota Highlander V6 AWD, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer (Ecoboost V6 4WD), or something along those lines.

Always choose the strongest engine.

>Always choose the strongest engine.
This guy knows what's up.

Jeep Renegade, partially because it's cute. Also small enough for you to parallel park "without missing out on a space" (we get it, you're bad at parallel parking)
Good visability, which is getting rare
Apparently has light offroad capabilities according to the Motor Trend review
Hatch for stroller space
Cheap (babies are expensive)
Can come in manuel

Father of two kids here, they're out of car seats now but we had to do two car seats for a long time. Out of your list, I say get the Accord. If you get a 2012 or newer, the backseat is surprisingly large. The doors swing open wide enough to easily get the kids in and out. If you get it 4 cylinder, which is enough power, it will be good on gas.l and cheaper to insure. Kids are $$$$... minimize costs as much as you can.

And Congratulations

If you are throwing in the renegade , how about the hrv? It competes with it and I think it will retain value.

Babies are small until they are old enough to climb on things. Rear seat access can be handy, but it shouldn't be considered an absolute must have, at least unless you and your wife are weak and soft people.

Before they are old enough to climb into their seats themselves (just leaving you to buckle them), they should weigh less than 30 lbs. You can lift 30 lbs and hold it out from your body, while bending down a bit, right? Also your kids aren't going to notice if you don't have 60 lbs of gear along on every outing. Don't fall into the trap of buying a ton of shit that's supposed to save you a little bit of effort, and then expend and ton of effort bringing it everywhere. You should be able to fit everything you'll actually need into a carry-on sized diaper bag, most of the rest is just unnecessary bullshit. Parents are marketed to incessantly, and not for your own good, but rather for the profit of the companies selling baby widgets.

I'd agree that you'll want something safe, but disagree that a crossover is a must. If you want that commanding view, I guess that's the best way to get it, but it'll make you less resistant to tipping if you spin into a ditch while instagramming your twins both being asleep at the same time (rare enough you'll understandably want proof).

Mine are 2 and 4, and I went from an E36 coupe to a 5th gen Camaro SS, the missus went from a Kia Sorento to a first gen Chevy Volt.

If you're stuck on Honda, they make good cars, but in terms of low cost of ownership and good safety, they aren't the only fish in the sea.

TL;DR, buy what you want, you'll be able to get your infants and toddlers into their car seats even if you don't have rear doors or van height floors.

Then comes forward facing day. We bought lighter smaller seats for my taco, still can't get a3rd person in, not even a kid. Next came the grand and... The seats didn't fucking fit. Now you've got $500 of seats that don't fit in your car.

On top of that going forward is harder to get them in, as you're still loading, because your shoulder is basically in the b pillar as you lift them over the seat.

The rear area in the jeep barely fits a dual stroller, but that's ok because every foot longer the vehicle is about a mile miss you have to walk a day because of how many times you have to go from one door to the other and back again just to get them loaded and settled.

So the gist is get as big as possible rear doors, and largest seat to seat gap 4dr. Honestly if I had to do it again I'd just go minivan cold turkey. Hell I daydream about how easy it would be to put them in a minivan, and my life is way better since they're three and can actually climb in and a at least snap the buckles.

Seriously is all about the car seats, and you can go to baby's r us and test fit all day. I highly recommend it, including taking your test drives there because even with an engineering degree and all the research I got fucked twice (and that's with test fitting at babies r us).

>When they're older you WILL need a minivan to haul your kids and their friends.
No, you won't. Not unless you want to be the team bus driver.

If you want to be the team bus driver, that's fine, but it's not at all necessary.

I was looking at an elantra touring earlier ...Hyundai reliable?

It would be fine, but it starts higher, plus no 4WD with manuel. But that's just me. Also, something about that little Jeep is so likable.

This. It's enough to worry about your own family. You don't need to be anyone's chauffeur.

ford expedition
find one from govt auction

try to get the triton v8 and the first thing you dd is rebuild the timing assembly.
replace chain tensioners, chain guides and install a cam phaser lockout. no need to replace chains

then replace all 32 rocker arms with new ones

finally make sure you do the spark plubs but take extra precaution so they dont break or strip
you can also get an ecoboost but you would be much better with the v8

>TL;DR, buy what you want, you'll be able to get your infants and toddlers into their car seats even if you don't have rear doors or van height floors.

can confirm

My dad had a Renault Fuego when I was born. maybe I was just a well behaved baby, but they seemed to do just fine with a nice sporty hatchback till it started falling apart when i was in grade school, at which point he got a Ford Escort, which lasted him a good decade till he crashed it.

you dont need to carry a fuckload of shit, and if you need a stroller you also don't need those clunky, bulky things that you can's collapse. Get one (or 2, I guess, considering-) of those small foldable cloth strollers, and then just get whatever you want. I mean remember, all cars have to adhere to safety standards, so realistically, it's bullshit to assume some are going to be somehow magically safer. if you are in a bad enough crash that someone dies, then they will die regardless. And realistically, SUV's are inherently LESS safer than sedans because they are higher off the ground, which makes them far more prone to tipping over.

Last, never forget that everything is different for you than parents of singles. Three single kids in a row are not the same, nor as fucking brutal as twins. The car seats are just the tip. You'll seethe at mothers with one baby happily running to target and treating you like is merely twice as hard. It's not. It's way worse and you'll come to resent their easy happiness.

On the plus side you'll have so little time for yourself that it won't matter what you drive, and you'll deserve something for going through it all. I bought a motorcycle when they were two just to get the fuck away in my head. Sure I only got to ride to get milk or diapers, but my GOD being by myself not having to think was worth it.

Also enjoy your time in the nicu, it's a glorious period where they aren't really your responsibility, and the last hundred times you'll drive by yourself guilt free for a long time.

Godspeed friend, you have no idea what you've embarked on, twins are the best but is so much more brutal than you can imagine. I'll try to hit the thread tomorrow and answer questions or post photos if it will help.

I'm going to need a double stroller since the twins. IDK if they collapse

I should note that the whole "Twins, Basil" situation will mean you'll need more interior space than I did, because you'll have to put a rear facing behind the driver's seat too.

Also go to a Car Seat installation clinic (Ambulance services have them all over), and learn to install your car seat correctly, most people are fucking lost and don't do it right.

OP here almost flew through the window of a Subaru loyale because of said incident

>TL;DR, buy what you want, you'll be able to get your infants and toddlers into their car seats even if you don't have rear doors or van height floors

Let me point out that you has one, then one forward and one rear. You had an infant carrier about the same time you probably went to forward facing. It's different with two. Different geometry. I put my twin seats in the van- a FULL SIZE van when they were rear facing and could not get the kids in because there was no side access.

For one, occasionally? Nothing wrong with 2dr, but op is going to be dead on his feet from never sleeping and have to do everything twice.

Hell my wife and I were in the best shape of our lives right before the twins came and we are both wrecks, still, three years later. Something as small a convenience as car seat access just multiplies value when everything else is impossible and everything is doubled.

They do, I'll get you pics tomorrow since mine is in the jeep.

New dad here. My 3 month old has teeth already. My wife and I don't remember what quality sleep is.

I bought an outback h6. It's not bad.

Congrats by the way. Welcome to the best time of your life. Being a father is the best

>3 month old
>teeth
Sucks, my daughter's turning one and she still only has two of them. My boy however, is three and he wakes us up constantly.
I bought a two seater because my wife already has an SUV for those monsters and fuck them I deserve it.

buy a van. i know what you are saying about now, but kids grow. and usually you find kids outgrow smaller cars pretty fast. avoid anything with 2 doors,
sure it looks cool but after moving 2 baby seats in and out of it all the time you will be over it pretty fast.

vans are taller and have bigger openings in the doors for growing families. plus you can mount a decent size tv in the back to keep them entertained. plus if you have more kids and family they will all fit. if you want good mpg buy a diesel van

Its a fucking shame honda doesnt make the element anymore.

>Honda crv
>Honda accord
>Honda civic
>Subaru outback
do you even know what a car is?

E39 wagon

Basically this. I grew up like this and turned out better for it. I can go camping just by strapping two bags of shit to the back of a motorcycle.

Also I never had a carseat because fuck safety

My cousins grew up in an CrosSUVan family like OP wants (spoilers: OP isn't genuine) and goddamn do they pack a fuckload of garbage. Also, the oldest is an open furfag. He dresses up as a fucking skunk. A. FUCKING. SKUNK. Make of that what you will.

I would choose the subie out of those four but have you considered the following?
>mazda cx-5
>mazda6
>mazda3
>lexus es
>lexus is
>lexus rx
>toyota camry
>ford focus
>chevy volt
>kia optima
>hyundai sonata

the cx-5, lexus es, or lexus rx would be my highest recommendations for a budget and criteria like yours

you may actually be able to afford a pre owned lexus although they may be a bit older

Get a 5 series

mitsubishi outlander

>good gas cost
>good maintenance
>safely

get a new car like this

> I am expecting twins shortly

I'm so sorry for your loss.

It checks all the boxes.

If you can afford it I'd go for a Ford Flex. It doesn't look shitty for a van and as a parent you'll likely have to drive all kind of shit around, like strollers, later maybe bikes etc. It even comes with awd as an option and eco boost.

just get a honda odyssey. seriously. once you live with a van you'll never want to go back.

I hauled my kids in fucking Fiat 127 until they were 18. Fuck man, what the fuck is wrong with everyone these days? Car MUST have AC, be size of a bulldozer, have 0 actual space inside and of course underpowered diesel engine. What the fuck, just buy a fucking sedan. It caters to all your actual needs and costs are nil.
protip: buy a sentra, corolla or focus for 1000 quid tops. Prefferably one that isn't an actual pandoras box of thousand repairs. There, I saved you atleast 20 grand and max you will ever invest in 1000$car is twice its worth.Might also teach your kids to be humble

Get a dodge caravan with as many stow and go options as possible. I am a twin and the caravan came so much in handy in our teen years (she upgraded to a 2012 when we were freshmen in hs, don't remember what year she had before that. We also have a toddler sister. Take it from me, get the caravan, it will be fucking useful.

Don't worry about getting something cool or masculine, you're an old ass man with family obligations now. Get a cool car when you retire.

This is OP,I'm 21. Not old yet

...

?? Crown Vic still sold for civilians until 2011

poor stupid dad say everyone should be poor stupid lifestyle

Dodge Charger Hellcat

>Want Recaro baby seat
>Dat price tho

Toyota Sequoia

The woman talked you into a crossover, we're not stupid. Nobody into cars enough to post on Veeky Forums would choose a useless fucking softroader over a decent wagon or an actually functional 4x4.

Yeah, OP is a tool.

Come on, OP. You're never going to take that thing off road.

Just get the Odyssey. Man up. You're a father now.

Get a cheap car. Your wife is going to get it in the divorce settlement anyway, and you'll need the money for the alimony

>not being the cool dad
OP, don't buy something you don't want, just for the space, no matter what you drive, you'll use up all the space, because that's the nature of storage room. You don't really need all the stuff advertisers claim you do, the convenience of the stuff is smaller than the hassle factor associated with having all the stuff.

You will have a less stressful, more restful life if you restrain your consumerist impulses, and keep a clear view of what necessity really is.

Buy a fun car.

Just get a fucking 4 door civic, accord, corolla or Camry you autistic fuck. That's all you need to cart around you, your slut, your larvae, and miserable new existence.

'01 traction control is dominate

Volvo XC90 or V70
The ultimate family cars.

worst suggestion by a mile.

Unsafe, horrible interior space for the footprint aside from width.

Honestly, if you can get past the stigma, a minivan is hands down the best option.

CUVs you're paying a premium for the looks while actually losing utility compared to the van.

Shit for cargo space, bad option. Poor predicted reliability and resale to boot. Any generic compact CUV (CRV/Rogue/Escape?Rav4) would be a better alternative.

>having kids at 21
You dun goofed. Run away while you still can. You're gonna ruin your life of you stick around.

>t.pathetic loser (either failed marriage or foreveralone virgin)

Play it smart OP, it's the real deal now. Gotta put the family ahead of your own wants, part of being a mature adult. Buy the van, enjoy raising a family. Stay on the straight and narrow and practice some patience, the opportunity will come to buy a fun car again.

Nigga, get a fucking volvo. 940 or 850 wagon. Plenty power and lots of room. Plus safety for the family. Only downside is older models don't have isofix, but who needs that gay shit anyways.

no it wasn't. Ford stopped selling the retail version of the Vic in 2008, replacing it with the Grand Marquis, that ran to 2011.

From 2008 to 2011, the Crown Vic sold solely as a fleet vehicle.

>unsafe
what do you consider unsafe? the most modern SUV will be considered "unsafe" within 10 years if they keep tightening safety regulations. And any panther is safer by default because it has actual visibility unlike most current vehicles that instead require a fucking video screen to back up.

>horrible interior space
subjective, Id say. to carry kids around, it's got decent enough space where it counts. it depends on how much garbage you plan on hauling around with the kid.

>a minivan is hands down the best option.
it's not a terrible option, but it's also a castrating option. if Op wants to retain SOME manhood, then getting a classic large sedan is the best way to do that. it's a family car with the heart of a sleepy mustang

Just my opinion though. If a wife insists on getting a fucking minivan, i'd just ditch the wife first

You got a woman pregnant. Your life is over. Its sad man, she has you by the balls, psychologically, emotionally and financially.

If I was you id escape to Brazil.

Jeep has no 4wd with manual either. 4wd is automatic only

You some like someone who couldn't take the pressure and ran away to live in a 1 bedroom apartment by the industrial part of town. You pay child support monthly , visit on holidays to pat your kids on the head and eat at the same table with the man who could take care of your kids...thanks for the opinion dad number 2

>Gotta put the family ahead of your own wants, part of being a mature adult. Buy the van, enjoy raising a family. Stay on the straight and narrow and practice some patience, the opportunity will come to buy a fun car again.
Dads who don't do things for themselves are Dads who come to resent their family situation. Staying on the straight and narrow is not the road to enjoying your family or staying loyal to your wife, there are plenty of fun cars that are practical enough to be family cars.

If you like driving bus and carrying the world with you for no reason, but the van, but don't buy a van if you won't like having a van.

Get a Volvo wagon. Lots of room, it's safe, yet still cool if you find a turbo wagon.

Or if she insists on getting a minivan, get an older turbo Dodge Caravan. FWD burnouts for DAYS.

Op reporting back with the big reveal

well faggot, where is it

No picture , dealer is ordering it. 2017 ford fusion. Got a sweet deal as well.

shit sorry 2016* is what I meant

Are you sure? It's December, I'm pretty sure all new delivery Fusions are going to be 17s, unless it's just being trucked from a different dealer.

>hurr durr i have a kid so now ill drive boring cars until my tolerance builds from dinking myself to sleep, and then that glock 19 will be feeling real nice resting in my mouth as i contemplate how i got here.

>I have a bus pass the post

ok he has a bus? what post is he trying to pass?

Not bad. My dad has a 2015 Fusion. It's actually a pretty solid car as far as modern Ford goes. The trunk is a decent size, and in general it is decently roomy. the Sync will basically make up it's own rules and change the voice commands on you when it wants. But that's not a Ford problem so much as a Sync problem.

hope the car works out for you. What color?

>tfw my dad had a SHO Taurus when I was born
>got an M5 when I was 4
Literally no reason not to drive a cool car. Family sedans can be fun.

Irrelevant since OP already bought a car, but anyways:

Incredibly poor side impact protection
rear legroom is worse than most midsizers
Driving an old crown vic is in some way "cooler" than driving a new van like a normal person? When I think of a family in a crown vic, I don't think of some "cool dad," I think of a welfare momma driving her brood around the ghetto.

>I'm currently looking at crossovers just because the height/ space. Before I get roasted I really don't want to go that route..but they tend to be the safest bet especially when hauling kiddos
This could not be more wrong. Saloons are fine for twins.

This has been in interesting thread has my wife and I are going to be trying soon. As an uncle and a friend to people my age who have kids I have some idea what to get. I currently have a 3rd Gen outback and the trunk space will be key to just throw strollers and groceries in.

Nevermind about me, OP if you were interested in a outback I'd get the H6. Strong engine surprisingly matters with kids just cause of lifestyle. But I see you got the fusion which is makes me ask why out of interest. I would have never figured it as a option?
