Can a highly cultured gentleman here share some examples of a good 4-cylinder exhaust sound? Growing up in a hick town in the South, I've been raised to think that anything with less than eight cylinders sounds inherently bad, like a weedeater or a "rice burner". Please help me refine my taste.

Forget any Honda, they're the worst sounding 4 cylinders hands down.
Inline 4 bike engines sound godlike.
Pretty much every other 4 cylinder needs a turbo to sound good, preferably with antilag. They're too raspy unless they have a restrictive ass exhaust.
An unmolested VTIR Honda or a 4AGE Corolla/MR2
I love I4 sport bike sound. good call.
do you not like motorcycles?
The best sounding 4 cylinder on the market is found under the hood of the Fiat 500 Abarth. Hard to believe this little fucker is only 1.4L
Anything groub b, granted, not all group b cars had inline fours, but most did and it sounded amazing.
Alfa Romeo 4C sounds excellent for a 1.75 liter.
Also the Porsche 3.0 I4 from the 944 and maybe 968?
Has never heard of a V4
Sounds like a 4 cylinder truck with a rusty exhaust.
Muh stock str8 pipe.
That sounds like a tiny Harley with it's nuts cut off. Nowhere as good as a high revving 600 or 1000 i4.
No it doesn't
probably because the Fiat in that video was an automatic.
turbo 4 cylinder sounds good
I don't think there's really such a thing as a good sounding 4 cylinder exhaust sound. Even the great sounding 4 cylinder engines like the 4A-GE or B16 sound like ass as soon as you're behind the car.
This sounds quite similar to my AE86. You might like it. Maybe.
Possibly that as well.
The V-Max? A 4bt?
4 cylinders universally sound like shit. You can't tune the exhaust to sound anything more than a raspy weedeater. Some people like that shit, but it's garbage.
If it doesn't have eight cylinders, it probably won't ever sound good, as far as I'm concerned.
Can a highly cultured gentleman here share some examples of a good 4-cylinder exhaust sound?
That doesn't sound horrible but it's not good either. I've heard lots in real life, they all have a boring fart like burble. Too ricey and not deep enough like the SRT-4's.
They can sound decent.
2.2L Ecotec was Chevy's gift to 4cylinder kind
wow shit taste much
saab b202 turbo and the delta integrale engine
22r sounds pretty sick
Granted that most inline fours are used in dailys and are designed to be as efficeint and quiet as possible. Anything sporty or with a vee ate mowturr will have an exhaust system designed to produce a better sound and/or performance.
Just something to consider
this, also youtube.com
4 cylinders needs to rev high to sound good. The tiny four pots sounds fucking mental.
Anything with ITBs that spins to high RPM.
This here is the best sounding 4 cylinder I've ever heard: youtube.com
ITBs are pretty much the only way to make an I4 sound good, otherwise they're straight up shit
Who ever claimed you'd need to put 4 cylinders in-line?
Look up Ueo's ae86 drift car - flst slide carbys on a 4age
Renault 1.4 Turbo engine sounds fucking good in my opinion
and one more of the same car/engine
Inline triples, inline 6s and V12s sound the best desu. Happy sounds come in 3s.
V8s just sound - I dunno - "lazy" I guess. I like them, but they never really sound like they're running well.
Happy sounds come in 3s
Then explain the V6
It's a pair of inline 3s?
that's a fast car
This is correct.
This sounds pretty great.
Also it's just 1.8 liters.
Any 4cyl with really big intakes is going to sound good because the intake noise hides the fart noise.
souds so much better in person tho.
This. Seriously, any 4cyl with 2 or more intake valves has a raw amazing intake sound- any of them. Only a few 4 cyl exhausts sound great without too much muffling but they're there.
2-stroke Detroit Diesel
FUCK YEAH I like how all these weebs ignored this one bc they don't know what it is. This sounds AMAZING
How does Toyota manage to make ITB sound like crap?
sound like crap
What did he mean by this?
Seriously Chebby, put a new front on this and sell it as the Cruze SS.
V8s just sound - I dunno - "lazy" I guess.
Like what does that comment even mean?
Sounds like shit. Nice try though, faggot.
Why does it sound like a fucking diesel?
It does? Think you got some problems with your ears, m8
4 extra valves
sounds like shit
Do toyfags even try anymore?
That sounds pretty fucking nice.
"Hey mom, look at how much of a contrarian I'm being for saying the 4a sounds bad"
If you're being serious, get your ears checked. Not to mention, the 4a is a 35-year-old 1.6 that's being put against a 10-year-old 2.0 K series.
Stock DC2 Integra Type-R exhaust note is one of the best 4-cyl sounds.
4A sounds like SHIT. It has a design parameter that no other 77mm stroke engine has- 122mm long rods and a shit 1.5:1 rod ratio. How do you manage to have such a short stroke and still chince on the rod length jesus. NO OTHER engine is that bad.
You think a Yamaha head is gonna solve a shit engine problem? No. For being so jerked off over and overdeveloped, for having a 20V head designed by Yamaha, the thing sounds like GARBAGE. Even ITBs dont help. Seriously, listen to a 4A and compare it to a B16 or F20C.................... someone might think the 4A sounds mean but only until they hear another engine with ITBs.
They both sound like shit. It's almost impossible to get a high compression NA 4 banger to sound, sport bikes excluded.
everything sounds like shit then
I'm not claiming the 4a is the best sounding engine, or the best designed, but saying it sounds garbage is pretty wrong.
Is that a MISUFIYA SYSTEM?
Anti lag + flat foot shifting.
If it's inline, it has to be crossplane, otherwise it just sounds like shit.
Looks like someone has good taste.
Sounds ricey and disgusting. Plus it's slow as fuck.
Slow as fuck
Everyone passed over the offy i posted as well. Pleebs just cant into good 4 bangers
Porsche doing a hillclimb
You know whats ironic, they're talking about the 4A engine which is a copy of Ford BDA which was inspired by that same Offenhauser, or so they say.
Somebody explain why he's got two gearboxes and a switch please. Not a diesel or a truck guy, so this intrigues the hell out of me. The second one definitely doesn't seem to be like the high/low boxes in military trucks (only diesels I've been around).
When you get ultra btfo by the almighty 10k screaming 4a. Rip kiddo
It's more like low-medium-high, it lets you get more gears without cramming tens of them into in one transmission. One has gears spaced closer together and the other further apart so you have 3x5 or 4x6.
I'm guessing the switch is a jake brake
Alright, that's what I thought it might be. Thanks
It's hard to find NA I4's that actually sound nice. You'll find very tuned ones that sound good, and normally 4v or 3v per cylinder.
Turbo 4's sound the best, but I gotta admit a crossplane v8 has the rawest, sexiest exhaust.
exhaust sounds from i4 suck, but they can make some pretty sweet induction sounds
I'll say subaru rumble.
Tho mine doesn't sound anywhere near that iconic sound :/
I wonder if German engineering is reliable enough so I can just paste here this link straight to the headquarters:
Suck some of that 4 cylinder Gayman goodness.
That being said, my personal favorite sound ever is Honda ST1300 V4 with standard exhaust:
it screams high technology
that quattro makes me moist
i can die happy after owning one of those
4a a best sound
Our turbo subaru is silent its ridiculous only like 220hp and only makes 'ssssssss' turbo noises.
yuropoors think that the A45 sound good
I can't believe it took so long for someone to post a BDA.
Racing was better before everything had a turbo
Feels ok man
My carb'd v4 Honda bike sounds okay.
Still a sewing machine at idle though
