Can a highly cultured gentleman here share some examples of a good 4-cylinder exhaust sound? Growing up in a hick town in the South, I've been raised to think that anything with less than eight cylinders sounds inherently bad, like a weedeater or a "rice burner". Please help me refine my taste.

Inline 4 bike engines sound godlike.
Pretty much every other 4 cylinder needs a turbo to sound good, preferably with antilag. They're too raspy unless they have a restrictive ass exhaust.

I don't think there's really such a thing as a good sounding 4 cylinder exhaust sound. Even the great sounding 4 cylinder engines like the 4A-GE or B16 sound like ass as soon as you're behind the car.

4 cylinders universally sound like shit. You can't tune the exhaust to sound anything more than a raspy weedeater. Some people like that shit, but it's garbage.
If it doesn't have eight cylinders, it probably won't ever sound good, as far as I'm concerned.

Granted that most inline fours are used in dailys and are designed to be as efficeint and quiet as possible. Anything sporty or with a vee ate mowturr will have an exhaust system designed to produce a better sound and/or performance.

4A sounds like SHIT. It has a design parameter that no other 77mm stroke engine has- 122mm long rods and a shit 1.5:1 rod ratio. How do you manage to have such a short stroke and still chince on the rod length jesus. NO OTHER engine is that bad.
You think a Yamaha head is gonna solve a shit engine problem? No. For being so jerked off over and overdeveloped, for having a 20V head designed by Yamaha, the thing sounds like GARBAGE. Even ITBs dont help. Seriously, listen to a 4A and compare it to a B16 or F20C.................... someone might think the 4A sounds mean but only until they hear another engine with ITBs.

It's more like low-medium-high, it lets you get more gears without cramming tens of them into in one transmission. One has gears spaced closer together and the other further apart so you have 3x5 or 4x6.

It's hard to find NA I4's that actually sound nice. You'll find very tuned ones that sound good, and normally 4v or 3v per cylinder.
Turbo 4's sound the best, but I gotta admit a crossplane v8 has the rawest, sexiest exhaust.
