/uni/ Thread 2.0

What university are you at Veeky Forums?
What course - Humanities or other?

Any fellow /oxbridge/ bros here?

University of Edinburgh, going into 3rd year of Ancient Mediterranean Civilisations (MA).

Any freshers want to join the Anime Society, hit me up.

Oldest (and best) university in Scandinavia bitches, Studying archeology.

Utrecht University, Studying Liberal Arts & sciences.

living up to the meme

What's the Uni like itself? Seems like an effort living in Scootland

CCC, Oxon. here. Entering fourth year. Cannot wait to leave.

I think you posted in the last thread. Are you the guy who said you thought it was artificial?

I am doing my A levels and applied to Oxford to do PPE, expected grades A for all: maths, further maths, history and government+politics.

Surely the most useful humanities subject there is? Can't wait to go to uni, should be fun.

College?

Pembroke but I think most people get mixed about anyway.

Is the University of Aberdeen any good? It's an ancient university but I'm still not sure if it was a good choice...

Decent lad, have you got an offer or are you going to apply?

I'm applying but before they consider me I have to take a written logic and reasoning test.
Have any anons done something like that before?

UNSW

College of Fine arts

Learning animation, film making etc.

The TSA i presume. Haven't done it but it looks tricky.

Edinburgh and Scotland are lovely. Bit expensive, but still really nice.

Aberdeen is fine, but Glasgow and Edinburgh are better. St Andrews about the same.

University of British Columbia (UBC) for economics

...

Starting international relations here in a few weeks

i dropped out of high school

Here like me?

My tiny liberal arts college that I went to for undergrad is of no concern. I'm just spending my days studying for the GRE and the nights working. It's monotonous and cuts into my social life, but there are worse fates.

history? haha

me too!

Starting there soon

Been in Aberdeen a couple of weeks, its not a bad city

Starting at the university of York in 3 weeks, doing History with optional modules in Latin.

UC Davis

UoLeicester - In my last year of psychology

Columbia, grad student

im going there (hertford) in october.

do you guys have as many traditions and ceremonies as people say?

what are the people like? im worried that they will all be poshtwats, even though a lady came in my school and said that was a myth.

any advice for freshers?

>Surely the most useful humanities subject there is?

ehhh, id say after classics (1) and history (2). though i dont now how that applies to oxford. i thought PPE was mainly "i want to work for the government".

do all past-papers twice. the test is super important.

i dont know about the TSA, but the test i did (Mathematics Aptitude Test) was out of 100, with a single mark being equivalent to an entire A* GSCE. I know the Physics one is similar.

good luck bub.

what are your AS results btw?

what does meme even mean now? ffs i swear everything is a meme.

Not that guy but is AAAB at AS good enough to apply?

I'm looking at going to Merton to do History next year

Anyone here sat a HAT before and can explain what it's like? Also general interview tips would be appreciated too.

Yeah it is, they actually have lower required grades than most top 10 unis because they can rely on the tests and interviews to screen people out.

What about for Cambridge? You looked at there?

what subjects? what course?

as i said the most important thing (if i can extrapolate from my experience) is the aptitude test. hence if you have shoddy gcse/as grades apply oxford rather than cambridge.

if you get an interview then thats probably the biggest factor as well.

i would apply. you've got 5 options (normally) so you might as well. "you miss 100% of the shots you dont take".

also, i hope other oxford guys chime in with actually knowledge -- i dont know shit, i only go there in october.

well done on your sick grades famalam and good luck with your a2's and applications :)

correct interview tips are literally the cliches you expect. passion, know your books, know your personal statement, you dont need any specialist knowledge in your subject, think out-loud ect

Cheers. It would be to do History.

My B at AS was also reformed/linear, which means it doesnt even go towards next year. I did English Lit, English Lang, Politics and History.

also you should be able to speak about anything you mention on your personal statement for at least 5 minutes non stop.

thats more than fine trust me. ive heard anecdotes of people being dissuaded from applying by their school. if they do, dont listen to them.

with a solid personal statement littered with books, and a good HAT score, you will slide in easy.

Currently at UT Arlington because I didn't have good enough grades to get into UT proper. Will be there next year for History or Archaeology

I have a relative who owns a second flat in Oxford whos offered to let me stay there rent free if I get in, so Cambridge has never been a going proposition for me - even though I've heard from multiple people it has the superior History courses.

Went to Northampton for BA, such is the life of a layabout.

Finally getting round to doing an MA, LSE or Goldsmiths are the only two I'm considering, wish I'd realised about the new loans for post-grad sooner.

>PPE

unless your a mature student, wouldnt you rather stay in the accomodation to make friends and uni life? the accomodation is 1000£ a term or there abouts (well covered by student loan).

unless money is a problem in which case fair enough

You'll love it. Don't live in Derwent.

Going here in October, anyone else?

course?

To be honest man, maybe. I've honestly spent so much time doing academic preparation for applying I've barely stopped to think about what I'll do if I actually get in haha

As long as the majority of people aren't smarmy public school boys I'm sure that wouldn't be a bad shout though

Anyone know anything about Lancaster university?

decent uni, artificial campus that some people might not like, highest university suicide rate

remember, don't look like you're trying too hard, needing to try is the ultimate failure ;)

What major?

Politics, you?

What about the history faculty there? I heard it's pretty good

Starting Teesside uni in September because it's the closest to where I live. Probably should have worked harder and not gone somewhere shit, but the history course looks decent at
least. Maybe I'll teach myself to program and do computer science instead, and actually get a job afterwards.

History and Archaeology at Birkbeck, UOL.. My university is pretty well known as being heaven for marxist historians thanks to having Hobsbawm as a lecturer until days before his fucking death. Also Slavoj *schniff schniff* Zizek. He rarely ever turns up and most of his stuff is subordinated to his lessers. He's more calm and reserved in real life though but when you get him into a proper discussion, the ziz whizz flies into action. The good thing about it all is that my uni is amongst the best in the world for my course subject and my tutors are predicting me a solid First for Year 3, as well as suggesting me to pursuit a Postgrad in Oxbridge/Russell Group unis. Will be applying to a wide array of things including a PGDIp in Nursing, Graduate Programs, PCGE, MPhil at Cam (doubting between an MPhil in Human Evolutionary Science or Biological Science), MSc in Genetics at Imperial and Edinburgh or MSc in Osteoarchaeology.

Graduated from History at Oxford last year; doing an MSc in social sciences now - About 50% statistics and 50% qualitative methods

what college? any tips for getting onto the History course?

i havent started but tbqhwuf i dont even mind a couple posh twats -- itll be interesting to see how the other half live -- as long as i have a couple poor-scum mates like me around. i find poor-scum who refuse to socialise with posh-twats just as bad as posh-twats who refuse to socialise with poor-scum. most of them are well read and pretty nice (if not a little naive but we have our faults as well).

(depending on the college) you self-accomodate in the 2nd or 3rd year - so keep that free rent offer open. if its large you can even stay with some mates and all pay cheap rent to your relative.

furthermore - i literally have never heard of people self-accomodating as a first year non-mature student. much more practical to have your tutorials in the same building you live in. also food is (normally) provided.

tldr; living in a flat is a stupid idea famalam

erm. not sure about this advice. its probably better to look like youre trying too hard than not trying hard enough ;)

>Zizek is one of your lecturers

pls give the pure ideology maymay man a tissue box and fight out his shirt size and buy him a non-cling fabric so he doesn't have to tug on it

i sometimes forget that zizek is actually a real figure and not some vague phantom of ideological goo.

nothing but a SPOOK

Psych.

You?

Neat, wasn't expecting any replies. Pleasant surprise.

I'm going to Goodricke, looks nice.

UNC at Chapel Hill, Freshman. No clue what I'm doing.

I'm surprised how many bongs are here.

Anybody university of Kent here?

Veeky Forums, Veeky Forums and /sci are far more bong than other boards.

/int/s got a fair few

Did the same
Literally a waste of time and money unless you're willing to do a PhD and then work for

>ITT: Liars and bullshitters

I also attend the University of Ivy League college to study race in ancient Egypt

haha someone's bitter

Make sure you take one of Talbert's courses. He teaches surveys of Ancient Greece and Rome. Best History teacher I've had so far

>found the drop out

????

oxford has 22,348 students
cambridge has 19,515 students
the other top unis in this thead all have huge student bodies.

i understand if you must pretend that acceptance to a good university is an unachievable accomplishment to make yourself feel better.

>As long as the majority of people aren't smarmy public school boys I'm sure that wouldn't be a bad shout though

Don't go to a decent uni. Go to a shitty former-polytechnic then.

Goodricke's shiny and fancy but miles from anywhere, not a bad place to be though with Heslington down the road.

I only ever heard horror stories, sorry dude.

heard its a proper shithole, gun crime and everything, chinese students who cant speak english disrupting lectures

Trinity College Cambridge for Computer Science (not exactly Veeky Forums-related I know).

About to start my 2nd year of History at Edinburgh.
