You must have started playing only recently.
From mid 2015 to early 2016 most of the new characters were just added without any means of being farmed, only via selectors. Similar to the Shang-Chi/Misty update.

Even if the drop rate isn't ideal, it's still worth it for the gold, same as DD missions. Unless you're a VIP0 shitter strapped for debris then there's literally no excuse to run DD missions.
