whatever related to winter driving

>driving home from work today
>decide to take back road because highway is stop and go the entire way due to shit weather
>back road is clean-ish, clear tracks to follow
>suddenly get pulled into some thicker snow
>lose total control (40km/h), just along for the ride
>slide into a snow bank
>crack bumper, shear the under chassis pins, mangle the under chassis plastic (dunno what its called)

first time i've lost total control and im legit spooked, don't even want to drive tomorrow

anyone have any winter driving tips? i have good winter tires on an awd and drive slow

I've been feeling like I get pulled into the snow a lot recently and find it difficult to stay/get back to the middle of the road

>take a side road in town which is one way and has two nice turns there
>slow down earlier than I usually do because lol winter
>rear wheels lose all grip, start fishtailing and end up having to drift around the corner
>car smells like shit 1 week later

Git gud

When you start to lose control let off the gas and steer yourself back. Slowly though don't swerve and don't brake abruptly

>volvo s60r
>michelin pilot alpin pa3 tires
>7" of snow
>go hooning
>car just lets me be a mad cunt like usual
it's the most boring car ever in the summer but it goes technovikingmode when the snow hits

The winter driving magic is that it'll attack when you least expect it.
Might be tomorrow. Might be a few years from now. But it's gonna happen. Winter needs to be respected.
t. studded winter tyre awd

Yeah, I know. My tires aren't proper Nokian Hakkas, and they're more oriented towards performance driving in freezing temps and powdery snow. They're a little weak when it comes to ice and hardpack. But it's so damn fun to be driving my car in the environment it was built to live in.

>live on back road
>try to go to work in fwd sedan, slide and hit guardrail
>running light broke and need an alignment but nothing major
>limp home, borrow brother's Jeep cherokee
>try again and skid down a slight hill
>nope.jpg
>go home and call work, can't make it
>coworker with Bro truck lols, says he'll get me
>say OK but warn him about a hard left at the bottom of a hill on my road towards my house
>get call from him 25 minutes later, he got stuck in the guardrail, I went out to meet him

This was tonight, we both got towed back to work. The tow truck ofc slid on a few of the roads.

ICE IS SERIOUS GOD DAMN IT I'M NOT MAKING AN EXCUSE TO MISS WORK

lol god damn
where did this happen

some dude rocketed by me in a nu-jeep today
hope that guy didnt have to turn any time soon

OP, let off the gas, smooth motions only, do not break, ever, if the tail starts to kick off, give it gas and counter steer. Remember, in winter there is only one situation you cannot resolve with a driving skill, which is a downhill slide in a FWD (you're fucked if you're in this situation), the rest can be avoided or redeemed. Also, downhills can be very tricky on hardpack or black ice, use engine breaking

>Drive rwd on snowy back roads
>Get hektik every corner while blasting eurobeat

God I love winter

Just a series of roads in western MD, random cold snap plus light drizzle

>Winter comes around
>nice slippery snowy roads
>suddenly speedy speed boy in my landbarge
>sick effortless drifts around turns and corners
>donuts for days
>empty roads because normies scared of slick roads

I like winter

>be me
>Russia
>driving home on a two lane highway, one coming one going
>snowing heavily
>see a truck on the oncoming lane
>for some reason prepare (maybe Jesus)
>50 meters from the truck
>car pops up from behind of the truck meaning to overtake
>head on collision about to happen
>heartstops.jpeg
>sverve onto the shoulder
>thick menacing dark forest is so close I break off a few branches with my bumper
>my car starts to skid
>slam gas and counter steer
>avoid the collision but slide into oncoming lane
>big ass truck lights heading right for me
>indicate left, pull the car hard onto the left shoulder
>truckbro feels me and goes straight
>stop
>heart is about to jump right the fuck out of my chest
>smoke 3 cigarettes in a row
>collect the shit from the seat and go
I could've been dead, no wonder how all of that happened and how I could react this fast and this properly. I was going about 100 kmph, almost had some lunatic take my life away.

>Driving grandma to doctors appointment two towns over
>driving crappy fwd impala
>go around big wide turn
>blackice.jpg
>back end slips out
>fuck, fuck, fuck!
>get around corner and start to fish tail
>almost swing into passing car
>handle the fishtailing and regain control of the car
>grandma laughing her ass off at how much I was swearing during the event
>First time I've lost control of my car in the winter

I own a rwd drive car now and I find its easier to correct steering problems with rwd compared to fwd. Snow tires make a great difference too. Plus sick donuts and drifts.

>be in australia
>winter comes
>nothing changes
>decide to go for a rip out on some country roads at 4 in the morning
>tfw slight drizzle and 38km/hr gusts that night
>hit some black ice while engine braking down a hair pin
>rear end flys out
>literal inital d level of side ways around the hair pin
>exit corner while over corrected
>van shoots off in the other direction
>hit gravel emergency stopping lane
>back comes out again this time much much quicker
>spin 3 times down the straight
>end up facing the right way
>mfw there is a line of cars at the bottom of the crest that can't climb because FWD
>~HIGHER ON THE STREET, AND I KNOW IT'S MY TIME TO GO~

was the most fun i ever had in that car, 4 months later the same moutain range took it, ended up rolling 6 times down a 45 degree cliff, couple of scratches but the van now has a bolder embedded in the roof.

Winter is fun, but be careful out there bros

you pretty much can't die in modern vehicles tho

Where I'm at, people die on the daily. But fuck bro, lucky AF

>be norwegian
>winter is the same pace as summer, just with more tourists in the ditches

>also be norwegian
>as soon as the trees go yellow, everyone drives 10 under
If I couldn't do mad skidz I would hate winter.
If we had winter and not 1 day of snow per 14 days of rain.

I really want winter to come :(

Do you have a dashcam like every other Russian? If so it would be cool to see this. Also good job on the maneuvering.

>tfw I crashed for the first time ever today

S-sorry, leafbros. I have brought dishonour to our family.

>on highway
>passing semi at about 5 am, very very dark out still
>very low visibility when passing trucks because of snow blowing off the back constantly
>snow cloud gets in way, can't see shit
>next thing I see I'm on the centre median, stuck as fuck in 3 or 4 feet of snow

Lesson learned: go slow when passing graders, semis, etc

Or consider not passing them until conditions improve.

>Downhill slide in fwd
Why fwd specifically?

True. I had a travel deadline, though, and spending 4 hours on a 120 km stretch of highway behind the world's slowest man seemed dumb (re: the grader). That went fine, it was when I got cocky and passed a truck too quickly that I really fucked up.

So how did your deadline go when you had to dig yourself out? At least it wasn't a hard crash, I've gone off the road before as well

mfw rwd+lsd and fresh snow

Really? Here in the eastern borderlands its pretty much the same speed all year unless its ice with water ontop, 50cm of wet snow or an accountant from Oslo in his BMW X5 in the front of the queue

Finally getting some proper snowfalls here, 47cm of quite heavy snow since yesterday early morning to yesterday evening. About 16cm since this morning, and its not letting up

Sliding around the mountain gravel highway between kaslo and the ferry to revelatoke side of the arrow lake in middle of winter in kootenays, BC. Go off that cliff in the middle of night and nobody is finding you until spring.

If your front tires are sliding neither breaking nor accelerating will help, and you can't steer because no traction. Basically you just have to hope for the best.

>Go for drive
>Be flying down backroad doing 70 because ain't no bitch
>Come over crest
>some fucking retard is stuck in snow bank blocking my lane on the road
>Oncoming traffic suddenly appears as well
>Slip between stuck car and oncoming traffic on the double yellows
>hit a fuckhueg bump in the road while going back into my lane
>thereitgoes.jpg
>Feel wheels off the asphalt, start turning wheel to the left like a madman while I rotate to the right
>Car catches ground, I got enough opposite lock in to actually hold the slide
>slide for about 1.5 seconds, front wheels hit tracks in the road, flip car straight again
>Realize I've lost 20mph in that little bit of time and keep on cruising because I am not stopping after that shit
>pass a cop going to the accident like 1/4 mile up the road

Along with your typical lock the rear wheels and just drag ass through twisty roads and dank stories of random oversteer because bald all seasons in 2 feet of snow, that's about all I got.

You can steer. Use the E-brake to drop traction at the rear, then just steer by rotating the car rather than the wheel.

>drive on back roads during
>get hektik and start doing handbrake turns
>car goes too far sideways and start spinning
>oh shi-
>there are ditches on both sides
>thankfully car stops before going into a ditch

I learned my lesson to never go full hektik in the snow

>Miata
>On a cross-country road trip
>driving from Memphis TN to Birmingham AL
>Gal I was staying with in Memphis says I should stay with her an extra few days to wait for a "winter storm" to pass
>Originally from Utah, I can handle snow
>"I'll be fine"
>Should have fucking stayed
>Get halfway through Mississippi
>Freezing rain starts up
>Gradually transitions into snow
>no biggie, I'm used to this sort of thing
>Eventually the snow piles up
>Still confident, driving a bit slower and taking it easy
>Let off gas while going down a hill and suddenly the car snaps 180 degrees
>"Okay, not what I expected"
>Keep going about, snap out several times due to weight transfer
>Miatas usually don't do this
>Eventually one of my spins lands me off the road and I can't get out no matter how I try
>Nobody's on the road anymore
>Resign myself to staying warm in my car
>Wait an hour or so, someone else dumb enough to be driving today is out in their big red truck
>Wave him down
>He helps me get out
>Go 20MPH the rest of the way to Birmingham

Later I would learn that my (new) rear tires had chewed themselves up in less than 3000 miles because the shop that did the alignment fucked up and left some weird rear toe that caused some mad dog tracking.

The tires and alignment were a gift from my dad since he knew I was going on about a 10kish mile trip, but he didn't really do much research or make sure that the car was truly aligned.

Bought 2 new tires for the back, got a lanny's done and the thing made it everywhere just fine for the remainder of the trip. But that was a really scary day. I should have stayed in fucking Tennessee.

Webm related is this very day, right before shit started sucking.

>be norwegian
>winter is the same pace as summer, just with more tourists in the ditche

>wake up in the morning in glorious padania
>50m visibility due to fog
>imbecilles uses rear antifog light
>i flash them
>they don't understand
>i get mad
I wish something better happens here

Uh
How exactly do you rotate the car if you don't have steering/braking?

Driving along during blizzard, have to go through a round-about, turn wheel, car keeps going straight, the brakes, they do nothing, sail straight into a snow bank. only damage is cracked front bumper.

Sure you didn't just buy tires made chinesium? What kind of tires were they?

>mfw rural Canada
>mfw all seasons tires on a truck

do snow tires do make a difference in big truccs? I've heard some brahs saying at that weight, and with 4x4, all seasons with good threads are just as good. I know 4x4 won't help you stop, but as far as driving in the snow, its great. My gf's Acura TL has snow tires and it still slips a lot more than my truck

> be norwegian
> changing radio station
> swayed a little bit with the car
could've died if I lost control!

Today was SICK!

>be me
>get first job as pizza delivery driver
>first night on the job is right after a snowstorm
>volvo 240
>go on one ride along in a town I've never been in for more than 10 minutes
>No streetlights
>all the roads are icy and change from dirt to pavement randomly
>manager asks if I'm good after one ride along
Yeah I got this
>proceed to go on around the whole night having a fucking blast

I don't know how people have such a hard time with the snow and ice. This is my second winter and I've only got a curb once, because of bald summer tires. Standing water on the road is a different story though, that shit scares me like nothing else

Good job from you and truck bro, stay safe

I second this
I don't know what he means exactly but if you slow the rear wheels with the ebrake instead of locking the fronts you can steer

Driving hundreds of kilometers over frozen lakes is something else, some cracks went down 4 feet and still couldn't see the bottom...

pics of the car? They're my fetish

>Be me
>Not be autistic
>Take it slow and easy
>Don't crash

>salts
>road salts everywhere

I acknowledge Finland and finns superiority as a nation and as a people

Not OP but every retard says this and then it happens to them

drive 4 hours for delivering daily newspaper.. god hate this job. I have hancook winter I pikes and fwd Toyota matrix I do pretty well.. would prefer it were the awd matrix I can't complain though. winter I pikes are older too.. were stored well and they have long spikes.
