Lad I personally don't find it hard to make Naruto names work but if the guy doesn't know any Japanese it'd be like asking you to make a respectable Persian name

They're not puns, they're just Japanese words for animals or food, or random katakana gibberish like a lot of anime names.

Well I don't think you need to know Japanese, I think if you at least educate yourself on Wikipedia about how the language is set up you can fake it enough to make a non-shitty Japanese name for the purposes of an OC. I wouldn't trust that knowledge to name a real Japanese person, but it's enough for some bullshit like this.

Find a language you don't know anything about then. Make a Chinese three-character name; your family name can be assumed to be Li and you guys are in the 2nd Earth generation. The child will be born around June 10.

Not everyone follows it but there's a bunch of astrological / mystic shit you're supposed to follow, and was followed more during Imperial times. For example, if Mars is roughly opposite the Sun (i..e it's right behind the Earth), even if you're in the Fire generation you don't add a fire-radical character because Mars is the "Fire-Star". If a girl is born under Venus and Jupiter, you add more heavily Yin characters, because both Jupiter and Venus are heavily Yang, but you should avoid too much Gold or Wood, and also avoid house-type character, so on so forth. It's honestly a fucking hassle, so some parents go for thematic names instead, so first child is "thinking deeply", second is "thinking far ahead", third is "thinking of virtue", shit like that. Generally you'll have your brothers and sisters name in that theme too for extra POTTERY. This is discounting style and honor names, which don't exist anymore.
