nostalrius worked with guild masters and e-celebs prior to release, whitelisting their ips and allowing them vip entry so their character and guild names wouldn't be sniped. this happened with both the pvp and pve servers.
elysium wasn't able to correctly do this, so they let people on then temporarily shut down the server. they told gm's and e-celebs to create placeholder characters in the first character slot, with a gibberish name, and then the elysium staff would manually rename those characters to the account owner's desired name, whether or not it was taken. if you sniped a name then you will be forced to rename your character upon login.
