To be useful though, it is necessary to determine if the gauge is reporting wall pressure or total pressure.

Oil pressure can have huge effects on an engine weather its too high or too low and can tell you of current and upcoming issues regarding the oil system and various seals. Nonexistent means turn off your fucking engine right goddamn now and tow it.

Gives you an idea of the effect of the oil filter. If your oil pressure has a sudden change one day, then perhaps the filter bypass triggered or there is a hole in the filter.

this. I've had my oil light come on, but the oil pressure gauge indicated that I still had good oil pressure. turned out to be a sensor problem.
without an oil pressure gauge, I'd just have to turn the engine off, get it towed, and then inspect what the problem is, or risk potentially blowing the engine up.
