I'm working on a metroidvania.

What do you guys think about some abilities being unlocked behind difficulty modes.

keep in mind I'm considering implementing difficulty modes as more "arrange modes" rather than actually just making you do less damage and take more damage. Different level design, different bosses

So something like double jump may be available in the first playthrough. Then in thenext you may get double jump as well as air dash, but you can't chain them, then in the third game you can double jump as well as air dash.

I was considering making an infinity mode which was procedurally generated but I usually hate those kind of games.

What do you think of progression being keyed behind bosses then?

Like beating a boss gets you an item that you can trade for a new ability, anything from movement, to combat.

With that many projectiles going that fast, parrying is probably not a great idea. As far as There's no "right" answer to any of this. I like the 2nd dungeon diving option a bit better though because it sounds more unique, I guess.

It is only $3 -- but cursor art is pretty easy to make. I guess, sure, if you don't have any software or skill at art.

The animations would suck too -- but that's also a lot of art in general to do. Once you get the pathfinding and unit mechanics/abilities in a lot of the game is good to go - but I'd still be concerned about the amount of work in the art that'd be up to you (or your wallet) to make.
