Tonitrus does a shit ton of damage.
Stake is as good as any other weapon and if you land the R2 it'll kill anything that isn't a boss.

No, you stand near the fog, quit, upload your save to a USB or Online Storage, reload the game and kill the boss. If it's a good drop, move on. If it's bad, quit, reload save from backup and fight the boss again until you get a good gem.
