It's a marketing tactic. They're appealing to people who would not otherwise give a shit about cars, but they see this and think "Audi stands for human equality! I better buy one of those next time".

It's just very surreal to see, during the Super Bowl, an ad from a foreign car company, weighing in firmly on a domestic political issue (the statistic basis for which is dubious at best).

It isn't out of place. It's a major issue right now for a lot of people regardless of the reality, and in this age of massive global corporations Audi is as German as Ford. If this were an ad for...Venturi or something it would be ridiculous yes but VAG is an enormous company with a lot of employees, probably some of whom pushed this ad to be made.
No reason to sell "a car" during the superb owl when you can sell the idea that your entire company stands for human rights.
My only issue with this is that the basis for the idea of the wage gap is extremely dubious from a statistical perspective. It can be explained by differences in lifestyles and approaches to work by men and women, and is not evidence of systemic discrimination.
I'm not trying to make this a left/right issue or a Trump vs. the world issue. The issue I'm pointing out is that Audi spent millions of dollars to put out an ad centered on a largely fictitious political issue.
