It's a lens that's applicable to a lot of history because you'll probably find class struggle everywhere you look, friction in society is usually caused by haves and have-nots. Class-struggle is also broad enough that you can fit a lot of conflicts into it.

That doesn't make all his theories right, and there are other lenses history can be viewed by as well. It's just one of many ways you can categorize stuff, it could also be the history of struggles between ethnicity, etc.

You could have a really nice house, a nice car, eat great food, etc, and as a consequence be living paycheck to paycheck. All that means is California is full of people who are really bad at saving money. If you're rating how poor someone is you should examine cost of living and income, whether that also corresponds to Californians will be more useful for your argument.

There have been some interesting studies on measuring happiness, and the fact that you can get two different answers on "Have you had a good life the last ten years?" depending on what the person ate for breakfast or whether the question you asked before was "Have you had a girlfriend lately?"

The context in which the question is asked is generally quite significant to the outcome of the answer. Additionally, day to day happiness (how good you feel on average) can actually be pretty different than what happiness you report in regards to life satisfaction. A rich man might report being happy and satisfied but day-to-day live a very stressful and anxious life.

I'm not necessarily trying to contradict you, Californians could indeed be happier, but "objectively happier" is very hard to measure. You're subjectively happier than the states he listed.

For example, median salary in Phoenix and LA is roughly the same, but renting or buying real estate is 55% more expensive in LA. In other words you'll be left with less money when you pay for necessities like rent and groceries.
