they're alright nothing to extreme 2bqh its a good place for if you are beginning to offroad. Some decent intermediate stuff also, nice small comfy park. Just don't expect moab or Rubicon trail stuff and you can have a good time.

can't really say much about the bay area, I don't go up that far north 2 often. Fucking traffic is Insane in the bay WEW. I mostly go east or south for trails. I guess you can try running over liberals and bums in SF though.

94+ 6.5s have electronic injection and the PMD is prone to failure. It can be relocated to fix the overheating issue but even so it's not as reliable as I feel it should be.
Cooling can be an issue for the 6.5 but a Duramax fan and severe duty fan clutch is usually more than enough to fix that.
