Why is it that damn near no one drives a manual in Burgerland?

Why is it that damn near no one drives a manual in Burgerland?

Literally none of my friends or family drive a manual other than my car friends.

Im in america.
I dont know anyone who doesnt drive manual.
Even my grandma does.

Because manual is for intellectuals and good drivers.
USA has neither.

get better friends

>tfw canacuck
>tfw my whole family and extened family can drive manuel

must be the britbong blood or something

I actually know a ton of people who CAN drive stick as well, they just either got a nicer car and couldn't get stick or just choose not to

Burger here.

Only met three other people that can drive manual.

*tips fedora*

as a britfag i asked a burgerman friend and he told me auto is better in cities simply because of pisspoor traffic management requiring a buttload of clutching for half the journey

my commute is simple enough that i'm fine with a manual, but if i ever get a job in or near london or bristol i'll buy an auto afap

Boomers and automatics being sold as a luxury item, when in reality its always been a headache.

My parents and my aunts & uncles can all driver stick but most don't anymore because "it's pointless". Almost every millennial has had a manual car as a shitbox at one point. My cousins will probably never drive a standard.

Because I'm an autistic student who can't wait to buy something shit to decent after working this summer.

Bet your gran double clutches like a good girl

The fact that everyone wants automatic makes it possible to get great deals of manual transmission automobiles. I'd never complain about the situation.

Not in my experience. Every car that I have seen online is more expensive if it is manual.

Because automatics are cheap and only enthusiasts want stick.

Even producing the manual counterpart should be less expensive. So this probably applies a lot more to new cars. This post is completely irrelevant as I'm assuming you were referring to the used car market.

Automatics are more expensive to produce and maintain

Automatic car for work days, motorcycle for days off.

It's 1 part having zero options for true manual transmissions anymore, 2 parts generations of automatic drivers, and 4 parts dumbassery.

>tfw my parents never even bothered to teach me how to drive any manual except for my grandma's lawnmower -- the clutch and brake were the same pedal (sicc launches desu)
I think they see it as outdated and unnecessary, like rolling windows. Driving manual is fucking easy though, I bet a chimp could unironically do it.

My dad gave me a '91 Ranger and told me the basics, then told me to go drive in the middle of nowhere offroad.

Needless to say, I learned quickly, and 6 years later, I still appreciate how short the throws are on every car I have owned compared to that fucking Ranger.

Needless to say, I learned quickly,

Best way to learn hands down, my Dad let me borrow his manual Cruze and after a day and a half I was already comfortable.

Burger here, I know like 10 people that drive/know manual. Majority of them are pretty bad a driving, not going to lie.

Also
>teach your kid how to drive manual and they won't use their phone while driving

is bullshit all of them still use their phones while driving.

I read an Instructable 20 minutes before I picked up the car. I told everyone I'd driven one for a while years prior so I "might be rusty", and that I needed to take it up the road and back to "get a feel for the clutch" and was driving it all over the place that same day.

Wouldn't you rather drive an automatic if you're going cross country? USA is a big place it's more comfy to let the machine do the work while you space out and listen to music. People who say driving is fun are like people who say they drink coffee because they enjoy the flavor. It's a big bold lie.

traffic jams and boring roads
also a manually operated transmission will consume muscle memory and concentration that could be used else where

also the shift links and shift forks and their bushings are a point of wear
and the gearbox and clutch must be positioned more relative to the pedal box than in an automatic type

Cross country maybe, but for short distances, listening to music while remaining focused on the road and your car just seems a lot more fun. Again I've driven automatic cars more than manuals so take this with a grain of salt

because this isnt a third world country

You're both idiots. Driving long distances is easy as fuck in a manual because you put it in gear and leave it there until it's time to slow down or pass.

America almost prides itself on dumbing down.
If the absolute dregs of society can't do it then it's obviously oppressive and an affront to freedom and democracy.

cheaper to buy second hand though as they're a diamond dozen and no one wants them

where do you live? I just bought a used car and of the few manuals I could find I would have paid a fair premium to change my own gears.

Its a just commuter car so I saved myself a few grand and went with auto, but still, I really like manual transmissions in 95% of my driving conditions.

>diamond dozen

Please do not reproduce. We don't want anymore like you.

Where i'm from, everyone drives auto because that's what the schools teach everyone how to drive.

I had to learn manual since my family only had a manual car for me to practice on.

Americans HAVE to drive everywhere.

Therefore everyone who doesnt specifically posess an affinity for it is absolutely bored to tears of it and would like nothing more than to take a nap or lay back and watch porn in their automated luxury roadbubble while the gearheads continue to barrel along sideways and occasionally upside down on poorly maintained backroads driving deathraps with ancient pushrod V8's until they either break in half or explode

I like how all the euro-trash comes to an AMERICAN board to talk shit.

Self driving cars soon

where else are they going to find americans to screech at? we have better things to be doing than shitposting at odd hours on their boards

bruh....

>It's a big bold lie.
Sounds like your car sucks balls.

which is now owned by a jap, who created the original japanese site this one is based on

i wish we could force people who don't enjoy driving to ride bicycles everywhere

nah, most dealers will upcharge manual as an "enthusiast" option.

I got a manual Taco, an it was an extra $500 over the automatic.

or take the tram/light rail

OP here

I'm an American

I drove my MR2 SW20 2,500 miles across the U.S when I was moving from my home town to my current college.

It was some of the most fun I have ever had driving.

this
Pop 5th or 6th and go

Did he? I didn't know that

Im a valet and see a manual once for every fifty or so cars

I know 7 people that can drive manual. Only 3 of those people still drive manual because automatics are god-tier for boring commuter cars.

The reality is because Americans drive cars way more than Euros and Japs do. A European's vacation is an average American's daily commute. Not to mention the congestion in the states is TERRIBLE. The time you spend on the road is exponentially increased due to the presence of traffic, and this happens every day. Manuals are fun when you don't drive often or only short distances regularly, but we Americans demand some comfort in our driving.

everyone i live with drives manual. my family all drives auto but can drive manual if they have to. who cares

I have a daily commute of about 100 miles and I drive a manual. It isn't hard, and I go through traffic a lot.

lel how often do you think you would be shifting? p much only to stop for gas desu. i commute on the highway and i p much am never outta 6th gear

...

If I can't double-clutch downshift into third and smoke some faggot driving an auto FF eco shitbox while blasting eurobeat, then I may as well take the fucking train.

Because our city population is higher and we dont want to deal with manual in heavy traffic with shitty drivers everywhere.

My parents and i can both drive stick, I think that's it for my family. I only know about 4 other people who can. I just learnt how to drive stick, nobody in my family owns a manual car anymore so I couldn't practice until I bought my own back in october

If you don't enjoy driving (and most people don't), there's no good reason to buy a manual, and if 98 percent of cars on the road are automatics, there's no good reason to learn stick. Americans invented and were the first to implement the automatic transmission on cars, so we got a head start in that sense. Europe and Asia took more time to adopt, but they're already seeing the same trend. Manuals are only appealing to enthusiasts.

You're fucking retarded. Europe has many more tightly packed cities than the US.

I think it's seen as a luxury mostly - remember, Americans are lazy as fuck. I've only ever owned manual cars because even as a fucking learner's permit 15 year old I disliked the lack of attention required in automatics. Driving should be an activity, and people generally use a car quite often, IMO it's more fun.

Europe is way more urbanized than the US.
It's why they all vote for communist parties.

i live in la and driving a stick in traffic isnt fun so i downgraded to a manual

>diamond dozen
I wonder how long he's been saying this for

Madrid has a population density of about 15000 per sq mile. NYC is about 25000 per sq mile.
Im sure there are places in europe that go higher as their are for the US, but the city itself has more people and more area.

Because a lot of people are lazy or don't care. also it's fucking annoying to drive manual in America.

>How to spot a newfag

burgerking reporting

Everyone can drive manual, not everyone wants to operate a clutch in traffic all the time just to feel superior on the internet.
The only people I've met that are incapable of driving stick are 16-18 as far as I know.

>this

I don't have a manual car yet, but riding my Kawasaki innacity is suffering. its all just feathering the clutch and sitting in neutral every 5 seconds because the light are shit and people are retards.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

>nah, most dealers will upcharge manual as an "enthusiast" option.
False. As fuck. Most REAL dealers usually charge $1,500 to $2,000 less because they know that shit will sit on the lot for 8 months if they don't.

Because they're stupid, lazy, and gullible.

Ooh! Ooh! Same here! I do too!

Because an automatic tranny is seen as a luxury here, well was.

Essentially the automatic was seen as a luxury item for so long that eventually people just stopped learning how to drive manual, and now cars here (newer ones) are rarely offered in manual, even if someone would buy it.

>tfw you're in your manual and see somebody else driving a manual in 'murica

It's like that biker wave, there's a 'sup nod involved to use 5speeders

The only people who give a shit about driving stick are the ones who think it makes them cooler somehow.
American lifestyle is about luxury and comfort. You can say whatever you want about how much better you think it is to drive a manual transmission in traffic but the vast majority of Americans say otherwise.

It's almost the same argument of "WHY DON'T AMERICANS USE CARBURETTED ENGINES ANYMORE"

And it's faggots like this that think it's an exclusive club to drive stick.
I'm also guessing you drive a 240sx and think that only REAL cars are RWD.

Everyone I know can drive manual, except my cousin who is afraid to learn because he thinks people will laugh at him when he fails and one of my female friends, but she can't even drive a fucking automatic. She can't drive at all for some reason. She's really smart and has great coordination, but can't drive to save her life.

Except the fact that half the cool shit that comes here is auto only like the new giulia and the chevy ss (at first) despite coming in manual elsewhere.

because of progress, a car was inveted to get you wherever easier, you know instead of walking, so now it's even easier to get to your destination.
not american

This

>choose not to
they cant drive stick then

Y2k+17 and you are still concerned that other grown men dont like rubbing a mechanical penis shaft in the palm of their hand while they drive. Hmm.

Because luxury car culture is still alive and well. People like caddies more than rally cars.

Kanan makes me feel things

Last time I read that I fell off my dinosaur!

>and the gearbox and clutch must be positioned more relative to the pedal box than in an automatic type
shifter linkages
hydraulic clutch

>what is FWD?

>ride bike
>not allowed to go between stopped or slow moving cars

How's being regulated by lawyers with dementia going for you?

It's impossible to even find used manual cars in the US. They often go for much more than there automatic counterparts.

I just bought one.
Cost me $100,000, though.

Europe prefers manuals for day-to-day driving but enthusiast cars are switching to dual clutch (notable exceptions including the F80 M3/F82 M4).

Americans mostly have autos/slushboxes for day-to-day cars but there's a bigger love of manuals for enthusiast cars (and in Britain moreso than in Mainland Europe). The F10 M5 and F12/13/06 M6 had manuals in the U.S. and Canada until recently. So did the 550i (until 2013). 3 of the 6 manual Murcielago SVs went to NA.

With that being said, it's not like there's an overwhelming desire for three pedals in the states. I think 75% or something of C7 orders have the 8 speed automatic (proportion of Stingrays in manual is ~20%, 30% for the Z06)

me too bro.

Aussie here, manual men here are even more rare.

Strangely enough though all the old commodores and falcons (aussie made ponty g8 and i guess mustang 4door for u yanks/euros) all have manual and only bogans like myself with taste like them

Manuals are gay. Autos are faster.
Source: I am driving one as you read this

Don't fuck with coffee or I'll fuck you.

Americans are rich compared to us poorfag Europeans who all live in commieblock shoeboxes and have to endure socialism, so they're not concernred with the cheaper maintenance or better fuel economy manuals provide.

>People who say driving is fun are like people who say they drink coffee because they enjoy the flavor. It's a big bold lie.
people like you are fucking scum.

Because manual is damn near obsolete. Only baby boomers like you drive them.

>Why are you on this board?

looks german

Same here, everyone I know with a license knows how to drive stick. A lot drive auto's just because autos are a lot easier to come by, I'm assuming because the market is so closely tied to the American market.

In the US it is seen as the poor man's car. Only econo shitboxes had it after autos came along. While that perception is not as strong as it used to be it still exists.
