Umineko was a lot harder to read for me, there's too many SoL scenes that make the pacing very slow.

In Higurashi I liked them, because they focused more on fun than romance or magic. You should push forward, you'll see it's worth it. The first two episodes of Higurashi are mostly set-ups for later episodes, the third one is very good. Kai is much better overall.

Seeing from the non-true route heroines and the final, its evident that he at least gave a shit about Kyousuke.

In some of the routes its at least partially hinted at that Gonzou does most of his shit because he either wanted to make someone who'd be ruthless and reliable enough in his business, or from his own fucked up experiences "raised" Kyousuke how he wanted to to make him be able to survive even if he remained in the underworld. Its never 100% clear if Gonzou is even capable of having a shred of care. This is pretty noticeable in Kanon's arc, where his "Human or Cattle" outlook is at its most prominent.

Most of this is extremely hard to piece out because of how Gonzou is never truly explained outside of how he is right now, and how he, at least from Kyousuke's view, always was.

Well, I did play the first chapter if Umineko and I very much enjoyed that one. Even the SoL since the setting is interesting.
Higurashi with its generic school setting is boring for those scenes.

How is Higurashi's school setting generic? It's barely even a school, having only one class with students from differing age groups. There's no school tropes either, I found it to be a really refreshing interpretation of a school.

Literally the same setting as NNB. A rural school setting isn't that rare.
And well, a school is a school. It's not really a creative setting. If anything, the creative part of the Higurashi setting is the town as a whole.
