Which European country contributed the most towards the First Crusade and/or the Crusades in general?
I would have normally said the Kingdom of France, but that probably isn't true since the people that generally idolize the Crusaders also despise the French. So I suppose it must be some German country or England.

The correct answer to the First Crusade would be the Franks, who sent to major armies under Godfrey of Bouillon and Raymond of Toulouse. They were not French, because France did not exist back then, but they were Franks.

The second highest contributor would be the Normans, who marched under Bohemond of Taranto. Bohemond was however the most experienced warrior of the crusaders and would often be at the forefront of the fighting. His aim was not Jerusalem, but Antioch - a city he took and made into a principality.

But would Toulouse not be aquitinian?

Boullion wasn't even a part of France. It was in HRE and now is a part of Belgium.

>They were not French, because France did not exist back then, but they were Franks.

Fucking retard
France exists since 843 when the Frankish Empire divided
After the 9th century, the term "Frank" refers to the French, as the Germans (formerly Eastern Franks) had found a new name (Deutsch) to define themselves

As for the Crusades, all Europeans were called "Franks" by the muslims because most of them were French and the muslims lazily generalized it to all Europeans

Tl;dr: You're a retard who not only confuse pre-9th century Franks with post9th century "Franks" (French), but you also ignored that the muslims called all Crusders "Franks" out of generalization.

>I would have normally said the Kingdom of France, but that probably isn't true since the people that generally idolize the Crusaders also despise the French. So I suppose it must be some German country or England.

Btw, is this a bad troll or is your IQ around 50?
If some retards believe something, it has to be true?

>I heard France was on the winning side of WW1, but that probably isn't true since a lot of Americans on the internet claim they surrendered in both WWs. So I suppose they must have surrendered in 1915 or 1916

An argument could be made for the Italian city states. Without their help with transporting troops and supplies to the holy land the crusades would have been impossible. Venice and Genoa were also two of the main driving forces behind the crusades; wanting trade rights in the byzantine empire and seeking trade routs and oppertunities in the eastern mediterranean.

>France did not exist back then

More retarded memes please

>They were not French

first crusade is overrated, Franks fighting outnumbered and poorly organised Muslims

Its ruler, Godefroy, and his brother Baldwin were French though (not politically, but culturally)
They were born in the independent County of Boulogne and spoke French as native language

>the Kingdom of France
The King of France didn't give a shit about the crusade and the same goes for any other king at the time, the the majority of the actual leaders of the First Crusade all came from literal whos dukedoms and principalities located in the modern states of France, Belgium and the Netherlands

>outnumbered
no
>poorly organised
yes

lmao this retard

Still part of the french kingdom

French, all the famous figures were French, like Godfrey or Richard the Lionheart. Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller were both founded by the French.

You might ask, when did the Kingdom of Franks became Kingdom of France? It officially became that way in 1190 but even before that, during and before it was often colloquially referred as so.

Germans mostly crusaded the Baltics.

>outnumbered
yes

In the way that there were more Muslim soldiers than Christian ones but they were mostly fighting each other and didn't dedicate soldiers against Crusades after Seljuks slaughtered the Peasants Crusade, considering that they were no actual threat. Which ironically allowed later Crusader armies to have upperhand because they were underestimated by the Muslims.

>European "Country"
>Medieval ages
>Talking about countries.
If anything, it was a coalition of lords pooling their resources than the stupid narrative of national efforts.

Overwhelmingly French.

Almost all the knights and leading nobles were French, the rulers of the newly founded Crusader states were all French, the language spoken was French, the Crusader military orders were all French, the Pope who called for the Crusade was French... to the point that ever since then the Muslims and Byzantines referred to all West Europeans simply as "Franks".

>the people that generally idolize the Crusaders also despise the French
Most people seem to hate the French, but it's difficult to also hate everything the French have done since that includes almost everything relevant in the history of Western civilisation.

France.

And the minority that came from outside the kingdom of France (England, HRE) were French too.

Not to mention the people who unironically believe the surrender meme are generally not very educated in history
I doubt they could even name one battle in the crusades, so don't expect them to know most crusaders were French
Most of these retards probably believe the red cross that initially served to identify French crusaders is the one from the Modern English flag...

>And the minority that came from outside the kingdom of France (England, HRE) were French too.

The leader at least (Godfrey of Bouillion, Richard Lionheart...etc)
Many in the low troops were actually English or German

Lol Jerusalem was defended by a couple hundred Nubians

Holy shit this.
>muh medieval country
Balkans in a nutshell

>Most of these retards probably believe the red cross that initially served to identify French crusaders is the one from the Modern English flag...

You invented this, right ? You never heard someone say this to you ?
right ?
