What seems to be the problem?

My local community college offers riding classes for beginners.
I was considering taking it, then getting myself a nice beginners bike just to get back and forth from school (~10 miles each direction).

I had looked at the Honda Rebel 500, but people said they were very under-powered.
Are they so under-powered that I couldn't cruise at like 55? Is the Rebel a decent bike for beginner? How about the Honda Shadow?

I was just looking for something small, lightweight, and low to the ground (which everything I've ever read said a beginner should look for).

A rebel 500 should be able to get like 100 mph dude

a google search shows that a Rebel 250 takes 15 seconds to get to 60mph and has a top speed of 85mph. I'd say a 500 would be a tad faster than that

A rebel 500 will have 50hp and 400lbs

That's gonna be about a 5 second 0-60 which is quick

Should I buy a junk bike, and fix it up?

Never touched a motorcycle in my life.

Have slight mechanical experience doing generic stuff on cars.

I think I'd be more comfortable working on something smaller like a motorcycle, and I could fix it up and potentially ride it.

Make sure you can find parts for it.

My XJ550 still doesn't have a gas tank because they're like finding gold bars for less than $200 on ebay.

Working bikes are cheap enough already.

A 2-stroke has less parts and is more exiting to ride. Get one of those if you can.

Abrasion, sure, but that's not the thing that wrecks feet. High-top leather sneakers would offer enough abrasion resistance for the large majority of motorcycle traffic accidents, it's mainly the ankle joint and crushing forces the boots are designed to protect against.

pretty dumb question but regarding the inside of the helmet can i just take out the cheekpads and lining and throw it in the washing machine to clean it? or is there a method to it? pretty new to riding so it never really crossed my mind on cleaning the inside of the helmet till now.

Confession: Riding for 23 years now. Usually get a new lid every 3 years.

Have done touring in 90F+ heat many times. I have never removed and washed a helmet liner. Nor do I have some weird skin infection or odd funk either. If you are really concerned just get a helmet liner/skullcap and put that on then put your helmet on.

They should have washing instructions on the tag, I think most are machine washable.
