Start with one of the GBA games, they're relatively simple and are all good. Don't play Awakening, it sucks, and don't start with heroes because most of the appeal comes from being familiar with the characters. Fates/Conquest has good gameplay but has other issues so only play it once you're really familiar with the series' gameplay.

Awakening is garbage for newcomers outside of easy difficulty. It lacks a lot of features the other games have and includes features (pair up) the older games don't. Play FE7 instead, you'll be way better equipped to handle the rest of the games in the series if you play it.
