You mean the orientation help on the minimap or the assist arrow you can toggle in options?

Neither of those things existed prior to 3PP.

My oldest pic with cockpits goes back only to november of 2013 which is after the 3rd person patch but I can find articles dated january of 2013 which talk of the minimap torso/leg indicators before the 3PP.
