The army officers were loners who were disliked by the navy and the air force. The few naval officers who joined the rebellion did so mainly because they were loyal to some army general instead of ideological loyalty. The air force became a non-issue after they were rekt by Goering.

America's goal was to prevent a soviet aligned state emerging on the continent that could open up supply routes to guerrillas in South America's interior. Allende nationalized the copper production, allowing the internal control of the copper market, wich gave the economy the stability it has today.

This was never changed even when all of the state industries were selled to private owners, including, water, gas, roads and electricity.

The nationalization of the copper reserves, was his main campaign and goverment plan.

As you you can clearly see in this chart, the years where Chilean economy was below the latin america average were the Pinochet years, it went up a lot since he left.

And a lot more once he died.

Pinochet's economic policy from '73 to '82 was a mess, and his handling of the '82 crisis was so disastrous that Chile was affected more than any other country on the continent. As a result, he had to backpedal many of his policies and intervene the banking system. The growth Chile experience under the dictatorship was completely dwarfed by the growth under concertacion governments, and the latter actually decreased poverty in the process.

Claiming Pinochet is to be praised for growth 10 - 20 years after he left office is laughable.
