Isn't the history of cultural exchange "cultural appropriation"? Of course you start out with the surface level stuff before sinking into the more profound or integral parts of a culture. Getting upset that a white lady wants to wear a kimono doesn't aid her in discovering Japanese literature or history or whatever else, if anything it will scare her away.

What it seems that these eternally offended people who shriek about cultural appropriation truly want is, ironically enough, segregation on racial lines. If you're white you just CAN'T wear a chinese dress or a bindi on your forehead and you never will be able to. It's oppressive somehow.

Personally I think cultural blending is cool and is historically where the most interesting stuff happened. Of course it's often messy so I also get the desire to live somewhere homogeneous.

Yeah actual Japanese people typically think it's endearing/flattering when westerners adopt their dress and indeed, if you visit Japan during some of their festivals it's expected.

Same thing with the bindi. I use these examples because they've received a lot of hysteria from the tumblr type groups despite the fact that in both cultures they're generally very accepting of outsiders finding their culture neat.
