Isolated mountain kingdoms are fucking hard to conquer

Natural barriers and a strong christian culture

A part of it was, specially the part next to the coast. A 33% of the ethiopian population is muslim. 48% of the eritrean population. 90% in Dijibouti.

>strong christian culture
I dont think this really mattered, a large part of the islamic world originally had a strong christian culture

Aren't they like 33% Muslim?
May as well brace for Shariah.

The strongest ones like the copts and the assyrians survived

Unless you are, wait for it...

>The strongest ones
Not sure how you'd prove that. A lot of christian minorities survived in islamic territory

"Survived".

Egypt used to be all copt except for a few hellenized urban elites.

And the other regions were islamicised in the Horn. Not to mention Christianity missed many many parts of Ethiopia or didn't really have staying power.

not other outer regions
my bad

The Spaniards

>Assyyrians
>Survived
lol

Mohammed sort of liked Ethiopia, so it was spared conquest

Becayse they fighted for their religion and their people unlike western cuckreuropeans who let the muslims conquer them.

There's at least 4 to 6 million ethnic Semitic speaking (Aramaic/Syriac/Chaldean/etc...) who are Christian and live in the West, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Jordan, etc...

*Assyrians who are Christian

Ethiopians were a powerful empire with an organized military and a crusader culture, not to mention they are mentioned as being blessed by God in the Quran for sheltering Muhammad so Muslim rulers were never harsh with them.

even so they did fight the Muslims a lot and had many crusades including sending troops to aid the Europeans in their own.

>Why wasn't Ethiopia Islamised
uhhhhm

The bakt, which extended to the Nubian states, was a treaty between the Caliph and the Southern Christian people that protected them from invasion and conversion in exchange for slaves. This was unique to the east coast of Africa due to a Nubian or Ethiopian king supposedly giving Mohammed and his followers shelter during their exile when no one else would.

Ethiopia include different ethic groups : Oromo, Amhara, Tigray , and Somali

The muslims are the somali, the christians were never islamized.

That's kind of impressive it's so low considering it's just a stones throw away from Makkah

Islam still came in though.

But the Ethiopian Christians were mostly originally Jews (religiously, I mean). And Jews are a pain to convert. It's amazing they converted in droves to Christianity. Even so, Ethiopian Orthodox is fairly Jewish, different areas still eat kosher.

Oromo are split ~50/50 and Afar are pretty much vast majority muslim.

Pagano-Habraic and king converted the empire.

>it's just a stones throw away from Makkah

Lad, it's 1300km across a sea and the most mountaineous region in Africa. Look at the map again.

>The muslims are the somali
>33% of the country is Muslim
>Somalis only make up 6% of pop

Ethiopia's defense in depth and guerrilla tactics were very effective, likewise Ethiopia couldn't take on a giant militaristic caliphate far from their territory, there was little reason to get involved with the Islamic world. The religious differences were also a useful tool to deter foreign interference in politics and the economy.

Probably why the Aksumites initially looked favorably towards the early Muslims was because they had previously been fighting a proxy battle against a Jewish allies of the Sassanids in Himyar. They may have seen them as potential allies.
