You could make the pistol shot melee range only so it can knocked away as the parry animation. It would look dumb and beg the question why the pistol isn't just being fired from a safe distance.

The answer is literally to dodge away from it or throw a light attack his way. The only way for him to punish the light is to cancel the bash and parry it, which wont happen unless you are really high-level.
