New to this game and I want to go with a standard 2hand Warrior type character, like Marauder, but as a female instead. Can I just make a Ranger and use the appropriate build/weapons instead? If so, is it practical or am I gimping myself?

The ranger area of the tree is more suited for 1h nimble dex weapons like rapiers

You want to play a 2h sword female warrior, you need to play Scion

marauder can do spells caster/totem builds pretty well, melee totem, bow builds (including bow totems) fine too.

But going pure melee its comparatively worse than duelist or ranger, unless you are building some very specific shit as poison bserker

I see I'd need to unlock Scion, so I'd rather just use Ranger as my pure melee. As a starting player, is there any 2h build you'd recommend me taking? I'll likely re-roll another character, but I'd like to experience the core game first and hit max level. I'm not really trying to do anything crazy, just enjoy what PoE has to offer starting off and then have a max level character to fund any later characters I wish to make.

Why people with experience of end game try to apply their logic and knowledge to someone so new they can't even pick up their first class is beyond me. A complete beginner needs to stick to the basics, e.g. if you want to play a spellcaster, pick the Witch, if you want to play a big dude who smash heads with big maces, pick Marauder, if you want to play a ranged hunter, pick Ranger.

Going for an esoteric build requires either knowledge or currency, two things a beginner doesn't possess. For the purpose of building a "2h warrior" which is also female, Scion is the most natural choice, with early access to melee damage, attack speed and either the Duelist or Marauder areas for tankiness.

There is nothing useful in the Ranger area past Finesse for 2h weapons so it implies going straight to the Duelist area and wasting a lot of travelling points, thus gimping yourself which is only magnified when you're new and every point counts.

If you're reasoning in terms of ascendancies, you're already way past the point of being helpful to a beginner. Dude has a 50% chance to quit after Brutus, so get off your high horse and get some perspective. The best course for him is to stick to an easy beginner build and unlock Scion if he really wants to play 2h melee female warrior, then he can reroll again once he ascends and realize he gets nothing as a Scion but that's a big if. There are like 50 steps in-between you're assuming he completes.

Ok, clearly I'm making things way more complicated than I need to. What I'll do is start off with Marauder, follow a basic, generic build, unlock Scion, and take it from there.

Once Scion is unlocked I'll try to figure out who's better for 2H gameplay between the two. I don't know which of you two is correct.

Yes, because the early optimization for a beginner is far more important than anything else an ascendancy would give. You cannot use the same reasoning for someone asking for end game advice and someone who will most likely quit before level 40.

I just want whichever is better for 2H gameplay between Ranger and Scion, that's literally it. I don't know who's right or wrong, so I'll just play with Marauder until I unlock Scion and hopefully will have the answer then.

Scion is shit, go Ranger. Fair warning that Ranger is not good for 2handing shit, duelist is better.

Classes in Path of Exile are not tied to archetypes. You can do basically anything you want with enough experience and currency. Spellcaster marauders, melee rangers, ranged witches even, anything you can afford.

Scion as the central class of the tree can do anything naturally, but lacks the specialization other classes can offer. As a beginner this is not relevant to you though, since your first few builds will be bad no matter what. It's better to pick the class that lessens the magnitude of your mistakes for a given archetype, you can't really fuck up a Scion if you go for a generic 2h archetype because you have early access to relevant 2h clusters.

For example as a Scion you can get melee damage, melee damage, a lot of life, attack speed, and that gives you a strong start already.

As a Ranger your best path for 2handers is some life, a bit of attack speed, and then nothing else for another 10 levels. You're going to feel weak and it's not going to help you if you don't have the gear to make up for it. So the class is not really suited for leveling with 2handers although end game that can be a solid option.

Totem Caster is outright better than Self-cast variance for 90% of applicable builds.

Scion leveling with generic 2h melee into warchief totems is going to be a hell lot more efficient than some Ranger who doesn't get anything special until normal lab and even then nothing really defining, not to mention all the wrong gems for 2h melee. Have you people ever raced in your life?

Only is really viable for Bladefall Occultist currently.
Spells that are locked to Traps work fine for Trappers, but Spells with Trap supports, not so much for most.

Duelist may be better, but the point is that I wanted a female character to go 2H with, and right now the current debate is which is better for that purpose between Scion and Ranger. From what I'm understanding Scion is better by default for 2H and easier for a beginner like me, but Ranger becomes better later on.

I'm about to flip the script entirely now actually. When I think about it, going through the effort of making a Scion 2H, when I know Ranger would be better eventually when I inevitably get better at the game and more funds, would kinda kill the prospect of having to re-roll into said Ranger. Honestly, I think I'll avoid 2H and Melee entirely and just roll with something different entirely.

I think I'll go with witch and just be a spellcaster. Seems like it'd be a good choice for a beginner, I can stay ranged and nuke shit from afar.

I never pretended that, you have reading comprehension issues. The logic that applies in racing (early game optimization, builds that are optimized following gem rewards) also applies far more to beginners than your rambling about ascendancies and their merits. People dislike racing because it's the most boring part of the game, but the point is that's it's also the most crucial part of the game for beginners because it decides whether they stick with the game or quit because they spent 10 levels for +10 stat nodes that are useless for their build.
