if the western schism had ended in the avignon seat's favor, the protestant reformation would never have happened.

The germanic, slavic, and celtic/gaullic peoples converted to christianity because they saw it as something exotic and "true", something rich from the orient, it reminded them of the glory of rome of which they once were in fear and awe.
Once the renaissance came around, and the wealth paradigms of the world shifted from mesopotamia, egypt, persia, greece, these traditionally civilized places, to Europe, the germanics realized they didn't need christianity anymore. They were disillusioned and so broke away with "protestantism". It was something to reflect that they were to be the new order of the world, and indeed after the protestant reformation it was northern europe which proved itself dominant in the world- south europe had to mold itself to them, and all non-western societies had to mold themselves in an even more dramatic way.
Today we live in a germanic, northern european paradigm. Though the winds are shifting once again.

The point is that avignon would have been a sort of "compromise" between north and south europe, culturally. there would be less for the germanics to think they had to break from.
It was really the italian's butthurt which caused rome to win that schism anyway, they broke christiandom apart

luther on the other hand was just a dickhead. reformation was one of the worst things brought to europe. they burned LIBRARIES full of old greek and latin information and killed and raped priests and nuns. they smashed religious art which was useful in educating the masses, such as stained glass, and replaced it with incorrect translations into common tongues which the people STILL couldn't read. it was essentialy a transfer of literacy and religious control from educated priests and to semi-literate aristocrats. which is why protestant churches are still barren.

reformation was fucking awful. it didn't SPUR literacy. literacy spreading downward CAUSED the reformation.

luther just represented a power transfer from the church to the aristocracy. that's what's particularly disgusting about his theology. it was just a power play, as cynical and disgusting as hillary clinton or anything she does.

they destroyed the tools the church used to educate people, and left the peasants even MORE ignorant than they previously were. they destroyed the ability of europe to unify with a single language (latin) and this is ultimately what caused total war and nationalism to create the atrocities in the Napoleonic and nationalist period.
