How is it that the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox, apart from the formula for Christ's nature, are otherwise identical after more than 1,500 years of separation, but the Catholic Church is much, much, much different from the Orthodox Church after a thousand years of separation?

political tension between ERE and WRE

That doesn't explain it at all.

Because the Latin West and the Greek East were already culturally distinct before the rise of Christianity, let alone the Great Schism

Cultural inertia and isolation.

What does any of this have to do with dogmatic issues?

They remained consistent because there was less rigorous social upheaval as in Western Europe (pope playing Kingmaker, enlightenment, etc).

Ah, I see what you mean. Reformation too.

Do they have identical rituals?

Any differences you see are superficial. The Eastern churches are still Catholic.

The RCC Pope being seducced by the vain promise of temporal power via Satan. Bloodshed aand innovation followed. Simply read a history book. Heresy begets heresy.

Virtually. There are some differences in things like Patriarch hats and art styles. But, for instance, both have premodern styles of iconography, the same styles they had prior to the schism, and very flat.

2D really is superior.

>cubism is premodern

>16th century Ethiopian illumination is cubist

What are your opinions on the Assyrian Church of the East. They split before the oriental and eastern orthodox churches and much later they adopted a theology that brought them more in line with orthodox doctrine.

Aren't they Nestorian heretics?

blah blah blah heresy, they basically renounced anything that could be deemed 'Nestorian' and according to their own statements feel that they had initially been misinterpreted. I feel they must have had the opportunity to developed in a way which was unique to the other churches seeing as they were never really a governing institution in the lands they resided in.

This looks pretty distinct from eastern orthodox icons. The style is just as flat, but this one is even more abstract.

It's Ethiopian Orthodox, which falls under Oriental Orthodox. See also Coptic icons, which are Oriental Orthodox and also flat, but different from Ethiopin

It's known as the Gunda Gunde style and it's probably the most distinctively Ethiopian style of illumination.

The Catholic Church has actually engaged with the modern world, trying to preach the Gospel to it, while the Orthodox Church has shut itself away and preferred to make itself an ethnic religion.

That's why there are brown and black Catholics, but all the Orthodox are white. And that's why /pol/ loves the Orthodox.

>Pope Francis' enormous popularity -- his Twitter accounts in different languages have a total of about 30 million followers, about as many as Bill Gates and more than Adele -- is a consequence of his openness to diversity and a softer approach to dogma. He represents a modernized Catholic Church. By contrast, the world's second biggest Christian denomination is proving so resistant to modernization that its plans to adopt some timid changes for the first time since the year 787 have fallen through.

Treating the church as an ethnicity is the heresy of phyletism.

When the Orthodox Church preaches the Gospel, this is the reaction we get

>While tanks and artillery have been Russia’s weapons of choice to project its power into neighboring Ukraine and Georgia, Mr. Putin has also mobilized faith to expand the country’s reach and influence. A fervent foe of homosexuality and any attempt to put individual rights above those of family, community or nation, the Russian Orthodox Church helps project Russia as the natural ally of all those who pine for a more secure, illiberal world free from the tradition-crushing rush of globalization, multiculturalism and women’s and gay rights.

Way to totally ignore what I said.

Stupid Russians and Greeks. What were you doing all these 1000 years? We spread across the world. We battled Nietzsche and Hume. We held the line against ideas like evolution and heliocentrism. We spread the Gospel and baptized all the nations, in the New World and in Asia and the Pacific.

What did the Orthodox do? They stayed in their Balkan shitholes and they rotted. You may claim that you were doctrinally pure all you wish, but what good is that when you don't go out and leave your homes?

Baptize all peoples in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. That was Christ's command. The Catholic Church has done this. Have you?

>We held the line against ideas like evolution and heliocentrism

>We spread across the world.
Because you were backed by colonialist powers

>We battled Nietzsche and Hume
No, you didn't.
