There was a connection, in the sense that there was a disproportionate number of Jews in the Bolsheviks But they were no were near a majority of the Bolsheviks, nor were anything close to a majority of Russian Jews communists. Most Russian Jews were still impoverished and uneducated shtetl-dwellers. The most popular political party among politically active Jews was the Jewish Labour Bund, a secular, socialist, anti-Zionist, but non-Marxist party.

Also, this over-representation isn't because of any conspiracy. Rather, Jews were treated like shit in the Russian Empire, so it's not surprising they turned to revolutionary parties who opposed anti-Semitism. Jews were also more likely to be well-educated, and the intelligentsia was a major source of support for revolutionary politics. Their education allowed them to rise to leadership positions as well.

And they obviously had no connection to wealthy capitalist Jews. Jews are not a hivemind.

It makes no sense to say they were funded by Zionists. The Bolsheviks were not pro-Zionist. There position was that Jews attempting to get their own state was a waste of time. Instead, they should focus on overthrowing the capitalist system, after which anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry would vanish under communism. They weren't as strongly anti-Zionist as the Bund, admittedly. Zionism was pretty small at this time anyway; most Jews were not Zionists.

Also, the Jews who joined the communists were only Jews in the ethnic sense. Obviously they weren't religiously practicing (because Marxism is an atheist ideology), but furthermore they divorced themselves totally from Jewish culture and usually rejected any sort of Jewish identity, viewing themselves as working for international revolution. Look at Marx himself. He was Jewish in ethnicity, but he wrote an essay entitled "On the Jewish Question" (which you can find online) in which he harshly condemns Jewish culture (in terms many might find anti-Semitic) and says it should die, as all Jews ought to assimilate. Marxists (at least in their early idealistic phase, before they actually got power) saw themselves as citizens of the world, not as Jews or members of any other ethnic group.

Many Russian Jews were communists because communism is an ideology of liberation. It's particularly attractive to people not only oppressed by capitalism, but also by Tsarist ethnic repression.

That being said, the Menshevik social democracy seems to have been more popular with Russia's Jews than Bolshevik socialism.
