The end stages of a cancer patient's life has to be the most insane cost to effect ratio ever... as in diminishing rate of returns in effect, but infinite increase in cost.
After seeing the cost and additional pain (& ineffectiveness) of "cutting edge" trial studies, of my father, my mother decided to just be at peace in her final days.

For $500,000, I would find a really nice apartment in a populated city. I would find a place renting out for something like $5000/mo. Post on shit places like CL after tax return time that I was the owner and they could come by and check it out. I would ask for a deposit of $1250 and a month rent amount for $1250 so each people would have to pay up $2500. I would do this as much as I could. If I didn't do this enough to have $500,000... then I would go somewhere else and do the same thing.
When my dad died, I didn't want to sell off his house so I decided to rent it out. People were willing to drop off thousands to a complete fucking stranger just to reserve the place until they could move in. Similar homes were being rented out for $2k a month, and I was asking $1500 so people were going ape-shit.
